A few days back, I mentioned that Bernie Williams, after the Yankees offered him a non-guaranteed contract, still hadn't shown up at spring training.Well, it looks like he's probably not going to show up at all.
Bernie Williams rejected the Yankees' offer of a minor league contract and will wait to see if a guaranteed job opens up for him on the team.Um, Bernie, come on man. Swallow your pride. The Yankees are at least giving you an opportunity to be on the team this year. As I said earlier, you're old. There's better talent on the team than you. Just suck it up and show up to spring training. They're trying to do you a bit of a favor here for all you've done for them, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you. Really, they are.
New York manager Joe Torre spoke with Williams last week and tried to reach him, without success, on Sunday.
"Bernie told me he had talked with Joe. Other than the invite, there wasn't any information that led him to believe he would be a member of the team," Williams' agent, Scott Boras, said Tuesday. "He's continuing to work out, will wait to see if their position changes."
Although, I can't say I blame you, with these two knuckleheads dominating the spring training storylines thus far. I mean you could always go to Houston. I hear they like picking up old Yankee players over there from time to time. Just a thought.

It's so sad the way that this is ending.
These prima donna ball players should have to work for free when they take off a month a season for their entire careers. Bernie never toughed it out like any other Yankee and he's a legend in his own mind. Bernie played the hardest I've seen him play, last year - a little too little a little too late for this fan. Let's play ball!
Please... Bernie produced a lot more last year than some of the other players that have guaranteed spots. The reason that there are no roster spots available for juggling is the dead weight that the lineup is carrying. And Diana, please... Sounds like you have only been watching Bernie play for the last few seasons. There was not a harder worker in the game in the '90s and he has earned the right to be bitter. Last season was his best in the last four years, by a considerable margin, too.
I meant, "Diane" not "Diana". Sorry for the typo.
Diane, what are you talking about? They should have to work for free? What happens when you get pregnant, should you have to work for your employer for free for the year when you come back?
Bernie Williams has always played hard, and he's the kind of graceful athlete that in his prime never looked like he was trying hard. But he was, he was always giving it his all. He was working his butt off every time he put on the uniform. No one in their right mind would EVER accuse Bernie Williams of not working hard, and taking it easy. Toughing it out? Do you know Bernie Williams personally? Did he tell you that he wasn't toughing it out? Just because he didn't complain about things doesn't mean he wasn't toughing it out at times.
A legend in his own mind? Are we talking about the same Bernie Williams who is probably the most humble Yankee in the last 20 years. A legend in his own mind? He's a legend period in Yankee lore, 80 Post-season RBIs, 22 post-season HRs.
The reason you think Bernie played the hardest last season is because he's reached the end of his career and he no longer had the athleticism he once had, so the grace he had that once made it look like it was effortless now requires him to change the way he runs and fields to reflect the natural process of aging.
Just because a guy runs like it doesn't look like he's trying doesn't mean he's not. Have you ever seen a gazelle or a cheetah run? It doesn't look like they are trying but you bet your *** that the cheetah is running like it's life depends on it and is giving 100% effort. Same thing with Bernie, he is/was a world class athlete and that's how it looks, maybe it looks like he is not trying but he is trying as hard as he can.
In conclusion, Diane is a terrible fan, arrogant, and probably possessing of below average intelligence.
Bernie is the ultimate Yankee. They don't even deserve an individual with as much grace and humility as he has. I'd rather watch him for five minutes than the whole team for an entire season. I hope he goes right ahead into a successful career without baseball.
Bernie Williams Continues Stubbornness?? Your kidding Right??Are we talking about the same Bernie Williams??He has meant a lot to real Yankee fans..5th and 6th Generation Fans..who are disappointed in Brian Cashman abd the way he has been treated..Shame on them..You dont offer a Captain a waiters job....Melky is pretty good..but needs more proving time in my book..what happens if Melky is cold in his sophomore year?? I think the Yankees are jumping the gun..Bernie at the very least deserves the 4th outfielder spot..or even a firstbasemens glove...after 100 years of Yankees fans in my family ..Me and my son could be the last!! I cant wait to travel 300 miles to Yankee stadium to BOOO Cashman!!
I think that Bernie Williams is a future hall of famer and deserves a little respect for the roll he has always played as a NY Yankee. George Steinbrenner has not treated him with that respect ever.I can remember being in the Canyon of Heros at the ticker tape parade and Bernie wasn't even assured a position back then. He has always been slighted. Heck back then even cry baby Knoblach was treated with more respect. Bernie will go down in history and always be remembered. The Yankee Administration needs to s---or get off the pot offer him a contract or thank him for a job well done. Stop the half way nonsense!
Anybody who would call Derek Jeter a knucklehead is brain dead. Get a job you hack.
