Like his predecessor Barry Bonds before him, Sammy Sosa arrived at camp today, and the world stopped. OK, not really:
Sammy Sosa arrived for spring training with the Texas Rangers early Friday morning, appearing to be in good shape and good spirits after a season out of the game. Can you feel the excitement? Can you?
Sosa got to the complex about two hours before a meeting that would precede the team's first full-squad workout. The 38-year-old Sosa, who has a minor league deal with his original team for a chance to get back in the major leagues, was there early to complete a physical.
Wearing a short-sleeve shirt with yellow and white stripes, Sosa joked with reporters by looking at his watch as if to remind them he showed up early. He said he was happy to be there as he hopped on a golf cart with a team official.
The clubhouse wasn't open to the media when Sosa went inside. The Rangers planned an afternoon news conference for Sosa, the former NL MVP and seven-time All-Star whose 588 home runs are fifth on the career list.
Let's just hope Sammy doesn't run into George Mitchell at camp this year. Because that could get awkwarrrrrd.
