Certain friends of mine who shall remain nameless, ahem Alan and Vince, keep talking up the D'Backs in '07 as a World Series sleeper. If that's not reason enough to watch this team in '07, then here's plenty more.
The biggest acquisition for Arizona was Randy Johnson who's looking to pick up where he left off, which is to say winning four Cy Young Awards in a six year span for the D'Backs. See the whole key to Randy Johnson's success is that he's happy, unlike his nightmarish days in New York. Yankees GM Brian Cashman even says Randy Johnson has already smiled more since returning to Arizona than he did in two years with the Yanks, which if you've seen his grill, might not be the prettiest thing.
Aside from geriatric Johnson, the youth movement is in full effect in the desert. Top farm-hands Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin, and Chris Young will all have an entire season to prove themselves. Plus, there's gold-glover Orlando Hudson and solid stick Chad Tracy, along with defending Cy Young winner, Brandon Webb. Eric Byrnes led the team in dingers last year and uses the same balls out approach on the field as he does off of it, making him one of the most exciting players to watch on a nightly basis, and a perennial fan favorite. The dude also sports a sweet 'do -- always worth watching.
You can also expect big things from first baseman Conor Jackson who most likely will have first base all to himself this year. If his .441 slug doesn't impress you, then maybe Conor taking yours truly deep to start his senior season of high school will validate his worth. That of course would be his claim to fame, not mine.
