Gary Matthews, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim CF, is implicated in a steroid bust that took place in a downtown Orlando pharmacy, the Seattle Post reported today. Via With Leather comes this report from Steroid Nation, who have taken a variety of stories, including the Seattle Post's original report and the Albany Times Union's recap of the bust and aggregated the information.
I'll let Post take it from here:
A downtown pharmacy here was raided by a law enforcement task force on Tuesday, apparently as a result of a large New York state grand jury investigation into Internet drug sales. So there you have it. Add Gary Matthews to the burgeoning and depressing list of players implicated in steroid use. We'll have much more on this, including reaction, in the near future.
The unusual inquiry, led by Albany County's district attorney, has taken New York narcotics agents and a federal task force deep inside a maze of shadowy pharmacies and Web sites that have reaped millions of dollars in profit by allegedly exploiting federal and state prescription laws, according to court records.
...
The customers include Los Angeles Angels centerfielder Gary Matthews Jr., according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.
Sources also said New York Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement investigators recently interviewed a top physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers about his alleged purchase last year of roughly $150,000 of testosterone and human growth hormone.

Luckily for Gary, he'll be able to hire good lawyers with that new contract.
He may even have Johnnie Cochran exhumed.
Id wait..sounds fishy to me
That would explain how he had that "career" season last year. I wonder if the Angels can invalidate his contract.
I don't know if the Angels should void his contract, or at least make his shoot up more.
Yes...wait a while...remember how upset everyone got at Rafael Palmiero over accusing Tejada? How did THAT end up!
This story has been out for a couple hours, no report on fox news at all and only general report of the bust, no names, on espn news. What's up with that?
Could this be another cover up similat to Roger's reported use? Or is this just another attempt to stick their head in the sand cause it ain't about Bonds. I do know that if Bonds name had been mentioned, There would be no news like That News.
Just another of many examples of how bonds has been treated unfairly.
This is awesome I wanted the Rangers to sign him, now i don't want him, we already have a roided up outfielder in Sammy Sosa. I still think theres many more steroid users especially in the west.
Oh, don't be so sure of that. From reading several articles on the web it apears that $10 million worth of illeagle steriods were distributed in the Albany-New York area.
i wonder how those eastern based sports writers, Mike & Mike are going to cover this over. "Mets & Yankee's, best steroids money can buy". I think not, but it certainly gives Bud Selig somthing less that 3 years old to look into.
i want to hear and see names, teams and players. Come on Bud, here's your chance to get to the bottom of it.
Matthews couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when he played with the o's for 3 or 4 year's, Suddenly he is bonds reincarnated in texas. Drug test these idiots daily and then let's see who the real players are. Also I will hope for the worst for Bonds, A truly repulsive individual who doesn't even deserve any mention among the great one's like Ruth and Aaron. Everyone who remembers him from his day's with the pirates remembers him as a skinny player who alway's choked when they made the playoff's. Funny how fat his head is now and seems to keep on growing.
Am I the only one that sees the Tony LaRussa connection here? He manages in Oakland with two king steroid boys, Maguire and Jose (baseballs bounce off his head for homeruns) Conseco. Then he moves to St. Louis where he reunites with Maguire and takes an impressionable 18 year old rookie and turns him into a potential 75 HR/Year monster ... if the injuries don't kill before he turns 30. What about LaRussa's record for winning games!?!? Ban him too. I bet he owns BALCO.
LaRussa knew what he has been doing all along. As far as Gary's, it doesn't make sense cuz he sucks all along. Baseball's new teams like the Feds, CIAs, and Senates should go jerk off and forget about the whole thing. MOVE ON, BOYS! Welcome to the America's favorite and oldest sport pasttime, newbies.
You take the lives and actions of others way too seriously if you honestly find steroid use amongst athletes to be "depressing." Unfortunate and certainly less than ideal, yes, but life is way too short to find the mindless behavior of others, especially behavior that you can do nothing to control, to be depressing.
Gary may do what all Americans have learned over the past 3 years. Simply, when caught doing something not appropriate check into rehab for 2 weeks. This makes your actions illness related and therefore acceptable.
Hysterical...Of course that would explain some inflated numbers last season. When you can't do it, cheat, right? Hopefully this will negate/void his new contract and his new job of parking cars will begin on Thursday. Glad my club didn't sign this phony/cheat.
Aren't you glad to see this worthless arguing continuing ? The truth is ,you can't have it both ways! You want the same results and better from all athletes now as you did before drug testing? Well, hello,do you know if that were to happen ,you all would be doing something else like working instead of mindless blog about other people that have more results than you and are probably trying to live up to your armchair remote discjockey expectations! Look at Dexter Manley! You wanted the same results from him and others after drugs than before-as long as your expectations do not go down, these people will do anything they can to get and keep their jobs and status in your eyes. It is just like buying a jaguar without an engine and expecting the same performance -get real! It's all about dollars and public expectations-All the real game has been ruined by money and yes--We the Public and our expectations!
Well, I have a prediction that professional sports will soon go the way of the outhouse and the leisure suit. These atheletes who get paid so much money for playing games, are gonna blow it but messing up with drugs, booze, steroids, partying, and mis- management of their money.. Some owners have already come to the conclusion that a hungry rookie making $300K will work harder and last longer than a so called super star who has it made and has had one good year in his career. First to go will be the NBA. drugs, paternity suits and the whole gangster-rap-hip-hop in -your-face attitude will sink them within ten years. Next: Hockey. The ice will melt and no one will pay higher prices to see the regular season games as everyone makes the playoffs anyway..Baseball will slowly sink and last will be pro-football..No not the pro college football practiced by the 20-25 top schools in the country but the NFL..Sorry if you dont agree with me but I am right. As I usually am.
If they really want to stop this just suspend the players named until they are cleared. The ACLU and
fancy lawyers will protest but it might cause players
to think about what they are doing.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn....wake me up when these idiot reporters can find a new subject that anyone cares about.
Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn.........wake me up when these idiot reporters can find a new subject that hasn't been beaten to death, or one that anyone cares about.
"son, ya smell that ?", "what dad? " "Oohh that smell of the grass, the leather, watch the cars son , grab a bat , i'll pitch a few to ya . " "whos' that dad ? " " oh don't worry about him , you, won't need him till your about 20 or 21, for now just throw a donut on ya bat and warm up . "..........just a reminder ,ty and enjoy the season.
