One thing I've never really understood is why the Rogers Clemens sweepstakes was limited to Houston, New York and Boston. Obviously he has a connection with all of those teams, but if he ends up getting the itch to return one more time, why wouldn't he consider latching on with another contender?
Apparently Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty has the same question. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
General manager Walt Jocketty, assistant general manager John Mozeliak and vice president of player personnel Jerry Walker met at length Monday morning at a nearby coffee shop with one of Clemens' lead agents, Alan Hendricks, and two associates. Much of their two-hour meeting focused on Hendricks clients Braden Looper and Kip Wells, but Clemens was discussed.Even if it the Rocket doesn't land in St. Louis, I'm happy to see the Cardinals at least broach the subject -- World Series champs or not, anyone planning on opening the season with Kip Wells and Braden Looper in the rotation owes it to themselves to at least try finding another starter.
"I guess you would always have interest in a guy like that," Jocketty said. "He's someone we've expressed interest in before. I'm not sure it would be mutual, though. There are so many factors involved it would be pretty tough to do any deal with them. You never know."
One club official played down the Cardinals' chances of landing Clemens to "1 million to 1."

When all is said and done, the entire article turned out to be nothing more than a fantasy. THAT was worthy of a headline?
Admittedly, this IS AOL so I shouldn't be surprised.
Hey, if the KC Royals admit they'd like to sign him, but agree it probably won't happen either, does that mean you can write the entire article again?
By the way, I hear the Boston Red Sox think Albert Pujols is a fairly decent player. Does that mean you should write something, indicating the Sox are "interested," because, using the logic you used based on Jocketty's "You never know," something MIGHT happen down the road?
These blogs have taken on a life of their own. All they are is one rumor after another, with virtually nothing based in reality.
Of course the Cardinals are interested in Clemens? Who wouldn't be? The whole thing came as a revelation to you?
If Clemens' agent were talking any and every team, no, it wouldn't be remarkable. But as far as anyone is aware, the Cards are the first team aside from the Yanks, Sox and Astros to even have a conversation about this. You don't think a Cardinals fan would be interested in hearing about that?
If you are not a Cardinals fan and don't follow Jockety, then you don't get this article. Walt is a cunning son of a gun that will surprise you in the end. Throwing a name on the chopping block and saying "It would be nice" is just his way of saying something is up. In the past few years he has shocked Cards fans with some great moves way after a trade deadline.
In the end: Look beyond the article.
I dount we get him but you never know with Walt.
I am so tired of hearing about Clemens. His Ego is so huge that every year he needs people to beg him to play, as he claims he doesn't want to play when everyone knows he will play. It is getting old.
If Roger wants the best situation for himself, why wouldn't he just sign with the Mets? They clearly need another starter right now, and he could be the hero.
