One of the great things about the Cincinnati Reds blogosphere is that they have not one, but two local beat writers that write blogs at Cincinnati.com. This gives them a place to share funny stories and asides that might otherwise get lost in the shuffle of newspaper writing. C. Trent Rosencrans gives us such an tidbit today when discussing the Reds exhibition opener, a 9-7 win over the Pirates that included eight homers between the two teams. Behold: [Josh]Hamilton and David Ross were talking before [Hamilton's] at-bat. Ross was counting all the homers that had been hit already during the game. Hamilton then said, "You forgot one." After Ross looked at him, Hamilton continued, "The one I'm going to hit."
Hamilton proceeded to crush a 400 foot homer that happened to be his first homer in a game since 2002. The guy hasn't hit a home run in almost five years and is still calling his shot in the on-deck circle. That is badass my friends. Now granted, the knock came off of Allan Simpson and even as a Pirate fan I'm not entirely sure who that is, but it's still badass.

Josh Hamilton, the real life Roy Hobbs, except I think he has many more wonderful seasons in him. I was really impressed with the first two homeruns he has hit so far, line drives that left the park in a heartbeat, one to the opposite field no less. I can't wait until he gets some air under his longballs. If he really gets into one at Great American BP, he's got the power to hit one all the way to Kentucky. Adam Dunn said he is the best player he has ever seen, and Lou Pinella says he is probably the best athelete he has ever seen...that's saying something. He's got more natural, raw talent and all around ability than anyone that has played this game in 40 plus years, since the likes of Willie Mayes and The Mick. Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard would be afterthoughts had Josh been in the game these past few years. He is the ultimate 5 tool player. He's got it all...speed, power, the ability to hit over .300, a great glove, and the best left handed throwing arm since the old school Randy Johnson. To all you A-holes in Dunedin, heckling him during spring training, well you know what you can do. Josh Hamilton deserves a starting job, he has more homeruns per ab than Dunn. Give him 400 plus ab's and he'll be among the league leaders in homers. Freel should be Josh's backup, but I'll bet Josh can hit leftys too.
