By now you've all heard about Pete Rose and his exploits in the Dan Patrick show this week. You've heard what countless talking heads, bloggers, and just about everyone thinks about his confession that he bet on the Reds every night as manager. And now to you can add the thoughts of John Dowd, author of the infamous Dowd Report that got Rose banned from baseball. To put it simply, Dowd doesn't even remotely believe Rose's assertion that he bet on his own team to win every night. I'm with Dowd on this one. If Rose was half as competitive a gambler as he was a baseball player, there's no way he bet on his team to win every night because there's no way he actually thought the Reds were going 162-0. It's not like he walked into the clubhouse each and every night, threw a pile of cash on the table and said, "This is how much I believe in you guys," so what would the point of always betting the Reds to win be? And if he wasn't betting on the Reds every night like he said, than Dowd is exactly right; Rose's gambling patterns were a giant beacon to bookies on the Reds' chances that night, and you can't honestly believe that Rose didn't know that."When (Mario) Soto and (Bill) Gullickson pitched, he didn't bet on the Reds," Dowd said on Thursday, when reached at his Washington, D.C. office...
The Dowd Report says Rose bet on the Reds 52 times in 1987. Each Major League Baseball team plays 162 games.
Dowd has said that when Rose didn't bet on the Reds, it was a signal to bookies that it might be a good night to bet on the Reds' opponent.
In twenty years Rose has gone from never betting on baseball to betting on baseball but not the Reds to betting on the Reds to win every single night. Anyone care to guess what comes next?

Just because Pete bet on the Reds does'nt mean he threw any games. Until that is proven, it should'nt matter. Pete dominated on the field and deserves to be in the hall of fame. As for John Dowd, I can't say that kind of thing on this post.

Pete is trying to earn a living! Has to keep those autograph sessions going where they pay him and has to get on sports talk radio where they pay him. I also believe he is telling Selig to shove it up your A--!!!!
I do not agree with what he did, but let's face it he was one hell of a ball player!!! How many guys in the history of the game were better????? Certainly not EVERYONE in the hall of fame today!!!!!

Do you really want to believe that Barkley never bet on sport??? Do you want to bet that Jordan never bet on sports??? We all know that Phil Mickelson bets on sports! None of them have been banished!!!
What about Ron Artest?????? He still plays and makes millions! Did Pete ever run into the stands and beat the S--- out of anyone?? Did he ever have the animal protection agency come after him for cruelty??? How many times has he been arrested for beating women?????

I've got twenty that says Rose's next admission is that he doesn't have a gambling problem and bets he can quit anytime he wants to.

Pete Rose is fighting a losing cause. Back in the 1940s 'As a pre=teen'I Knew of the Black Sox Scandal. I knew that sports players can be banned from playing just for associating with known gamblers. If Pete Rose didnt know the consequeses, he was really niave or he thought he was too great a ballplayer. Rocky Grazinano was banned from boxing just for knowing and associating with gamblers. That was long before Pete Roses gambling problems.

Baseball, first and foremost does not allow any association with gambling, to maintain integrity and it has precedence in enforcing it. If players and managers were allowed to personally determine the outcome of a game, for profit from that outcome, it would be the end of baseball. Rose knew it and put himself in a position of not only being able to be compromised but put himself above the game.

Rose belongs in the hall of fame based on his baseball career period.
Throwing a game to win a bet would constitute a moral breach that should keep him out of the hall of fame.
He has never been accused of that.
Betting is an addiction and many ball players with addictions are in the hall of fame.

The Baseball Commissioner had evidence on Pete Rose that was never publicly disclosed. Rose agreed to be banned from baseball for life. We know Rose is a liar
because his story keeps changing. We know he's a cheat because they have the evidence. End of story.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. His attitude with the media wasn't the best relationship in the world that is why Chris Myers when he was working for Einstein Sports Pinhead Network suggested that the streets named Pete Rose should be removed. It will occur when Donna Summer wins the Mrs. World Pageant.

I have been a Pete Rose crusader for many years, feeling that he should have his place in baseballs hall of fame, but after hearing and seeing different "truths" about him this past week, I feel that I was duped into believing that the punishment didn't fit the crime, so to speak, and have changed my entire opinion about this, I don't want to use "criminal",but, this "fraud", yeah that's feels right. I mean, for him to, knowingly, wager against the same principles that he practiced, meaning the game of baseball, "AMERICAs' PASTIME!" is simply unforgiveable!! His achievements as a player still warrent a place, for a reputable, decent, PROFESSIONAL person, and it is truly a shame, no, TRAVESTY that these achievements will never be shown it the hall of fame. Pete Rose, and with his last name being "Rose" has, by his own hand, taken all of the "beauty" that a real rose displays when in full bloom, and has turned it into a "WEED!"
