Here's some surprising news: Bud Selig is actually going to listen to a good idea that someone other than himself had. Ken Griffey Jr. approached Selig on Tuesday to ask if he could wear Jackie Robinson's #42 on April 15th to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier and Selig has actually agreed to it and taken the idea a step further. From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Selig not only approved Griffey's idea, he expanded it. Any player wishing to follow Griffey's lead April 15 will be allowed.

"He asked me if I minded and I said, 'No,' " Griffey said. "I think everybody should be able to wear it who wants to wear that number."

Major League Baseball already had planned to celebrate Robinson's legacy and the anniversary during each game scheduled April 15.

...

"This is a wonderful gesture on Ken's part and a fitting tribute to the great Jackie Robinson, and one, I believe, that all clubs will eagerly endorse," Selig said in a statement. "Jackie continues to be an inspiration to all of our players, and his impact will be felt for as long as our game is played."

I don't know how they'll handle more than one player from each team wanting to wear #42, but I'm impressed by the notoriously stubborn Selig agreeing to go along with what I think is a very fitting tribute to Robinson on the 60th anniversary of his first game. I'm also curious to see how many other players will go along with Griffey in tribute and the cynical side of me is wondering how quickly "Griffey #42" jerseys will go on sale and what the asking price will be.
