After the Yankees dropped yet another game to the Red Sox today -- making the Yanks 1-5 against their rival this year -- questions about Joe Torre's job security made their way to Derek Jeter's locker, where the Yankees captain did everything he could to put the doubts to rest:"It's unfair," Jeter said. "There's no way he's responsible for us performing. He's not hitting for us. He's not pitching for us. He puts the best players out there on the field, gives us an opportunity to win. We're just not doing the job. That's unfair, and it should stop. ... He's doing a great job this year. We just haven't done the job on the field. That's the bottom line."Unlike Jeter, George Steinbrenner had nothing to say after the game, which you can either take as a vote of confidence or an ominous quiet, depending on your perspective.
Like I said on Saturday, it's hard not to agree with Jeter here. It really isn't Torre's fault the Yankees don't have the horses they've had in past years, especially on the pitching staff. He can't develop talent in the short term, so how, exactly, is this his fault again?

Baseball is a very long season and it's a game of streaks... The Yankees are a team of professionals and will not panic... This is a media driven story and blowing it out of poportion to sell air time, papers... if Mr. Torre, had a series of poor judgements with his moves, or handling of his players that was out of line, then that is another story... That man, as a player, and as a manager, has proven too much to snip at his heels like that... Cool off, lay off...Enjoy the game !

If he should fire anyone it should be himself and Cashman. Their pitching staff is a shambles and Cahsman hasn't made a good deal in years.

I am among the majority when I say that Joe Torre is the best manager in baseball. He has had problems with the pitching staff, but they will come around and get healthy again. Golly, the Yankees may even get Roger Clemens back this month(May). There are five more months of baseball to play before the playoffs. They are a seasoned, professional basball club, and you will not keep the Yankees down. Here they come. Watch Out!

What Joe said.
Plus, the man behind the man in the case of Torre is Mariano Rivera. He's the man behind Jeter too. If both Torre and Jeter get into the HOF, they need to profusely thank Rivera for making it all possible. Without Rivera, maybe the Yankees win 1 or at most 2 championships in the 90s. Good but not enough to make Torre and Jeter the legends they are today. For proof, look at where the Yankees are today as a result of Rivera's struggles.
How is it that Torre was a lousy manager before he came to a team that produced Mariano Rivera and spent the most in baseball every year? Take either of those components away, and he's just an *Average Joe*. --Gail

Everyone loves Joe Torre, but that's not the point.
Why did he allow Chase Wright, who, before this year had never pitched above A-League ball, to give up four consecutive home runs? Is he trying to scar the kid for life?

Chase Wright was pitching meatballs. Its not Joe's fault for that. Joe plays the odds. Four homers in a row has only happened 4 times up until last week. Baseball been around for over 100 yrs. George let them play ball leave them alone. It's only April. This is the price that you pay to play or coach in NY.

How quickly we forget...its de jevu all over again. Last year at the same time, the yankees dropped their first 6 games to the red sox and went to the playoffs. Its the pitching...and the constant nagging injuries to them...Mussini every year comes up lame, Pavano, no luck at all..and they said the crop of players now are stronger than the 'golden' years? Today its rare that a pitcher can go 9 innings, its all about relief pitching..and now they all come up with sore arms and etc with all these new so called pitches..sidearm, spitter, slider and etc. no wonder they are all susceptible to injuries.

I have to agree with the poster who said it's not Torre's fault, but rather Cashman and the upper management who haven't made a good deal in God knows HOW long. Cashman should man up and admit that he's a HUGE part of the Yankees not winning the pennant since 2000.

Been a Yankee fan many years. when someone is in a slump, why not pinch hit for him, are they afraid to insult him, he might get mad. Bobby Arabu is case in point. These past few games a little ground ball could have advanced the runners, it was either strike out or popped up. There is more to baseball than hitting the home run, they call it little ball
