It's a pretty familiar trend. Roger Clemens arrives somewhere to great fanfare and acclaim, and leaves that same place a few years later with bridges aflame and fan bases thinking, "Man, that guy is the biggest douche in the universe." The Houston Chronicle has set up a message board for fans to post their thoughts on Clemens leaving the Astros for New York. Many of reactions are subdued due to most 'Stros fans not having much hope of re-signing him with their team's poor start and his hetero-lifemate Andy Pettitte having already signed with the Yankees, but I think this response typifies how Astros fans are feeling right now (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Astro fans): He said he loved his hometown team, he wanted to play here and retire here, well Roger you screwed us in the end. I'm sore at him right now, mostly from the charade last season, and now this. Roger we don't need you, You are an awesome pitcher but you go where the money is. Your loyalty is to your paycheck, not to the fans.Boston fans, well, they still haven't forgotten. Zach Hayes and Evan Brunnell talk about Clemens at Fire Brand of the American League. It's a long read but words like "betrayed" and "schmuck" are tossed around freely.
I don't want to get overly sanctimonius (OK, maybe I do), but Clemens pisses me off more than anyone. For slightly more than the price of the 2006 Florida Marlins, the Yankees are getting a guy that will take the mound once every five days. Tell me there's no problem with baseball economics all you want, Bud Selig, but my favorite team's second highest player is a guy that they're paying $5 million to play for someone else (we're talking about Jason Kendall). Talk about feeling hopeless sometimes- it's clear the upper crust teams and on a completely different level than everyone else.
But that's not all. Clemens put himself on a pedestal all off-season, giving us constant updates about when he'd be deciding between his three pre-ordained teams. Despite all of his self-love, his pissing around last year probably cost the Astros a spot in the playoffs. If he would've showed up in camp on time last year like everyone else in baseball does, the Astros almost certainly would've won the two games they needed to overtake the Cardinals in the NL Central. And how will Yankee fans feel about Clemens if they miss the playoffs by a narrow margin this year? Clemens' return still leaves them far from a sure thing in the stacked American League and they certainly would be helped by him taking some of the April starts made by Darrell Rasner, Chase Wright, and Jeff Karstens. In fact, I still wouldn't bet on the Yankees to make the playoffs. Still, it's hard to think Clemens cares about the Yankees because they aren't Roger Clemens and he really doesn't seem to care much about anyone else.

Will McDonough of the Boston Globe called him the "Texas Con Man" for his BS. In 1997 he (Roger) talked about wanting to pitch closer to home (Texas) and instead goes north to Toronto when they offered him the most money. Then he talked about retiring after 2003 then turns around and signs with the Astros which enraged the Yankees (see how they do the two step on that one) and the fans. Now he's back selling is ass to the highest bidder.
Roger was a six inning, 100 pitch guy in the NL. In the AL and especially the AL East that means Torre will be coming out in the 5th and 6th innings to take him out after the Sox, Jays and Tampa have run his pitch count.
Also, I wonder how Jeter is going to feel when Beckett, Burnett or Cabrera retaliate against him for Roger throwing at their teammates? 97mph really hurts when it hits you in the ribs or the hands.

It's true -- outside of NY, people basically think Clemens is a prick and a sissy. I'm a Cub fan, and even though I have nothing against the Astros except wanting to beat them, I looked forward to Soriano, Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and (especially, since Roger gets JACKED by him) Jaques Jones. Now the AL gets to beat the crap out of him.
Why is Roger a sissy? Well, you wouldn't see REAL troopers such as GREG MADDUX or JOHN SMOTLTZ or CURT SCHILLING waiting for two months on the sidelines to see which team will pay him the most for him to sell his ass to. Seriously -- would a real professional such as MADDUX, for example (who beat Roger during his last start against him) sit out a third of the season on his watch just to primp and preen and see which team he likes best? No way.
Astros fans -- the only thing you lost was deadweight. Take heart in the GOOD players on your team. Again -- do you think guys like former star JEFF BAGWELL or soon-to-be 3,000 hit-man BIGGIO would leave his team hanging for two or three months? I don't think so. And just watch -- Roger is going to get LIT UP over in the AL. Roger Clemens is a loser and a crybaby, and a spoiled little brat.

Astros fans have been spared. It's tough in the NL Central and Roger cannot handle tough pennant races. He's going to get LIT UP in the AL.
Also, do you think guys like CRAIG BIGGIO or JOSE CRUZ SR. or NOLAN RYAN or JEFF BAGWELL would leave a team hanging for months, as Roger did? No. They are real men -- real ballplayers. Roger primps and preens and is a sissy.

Hell, Clements is just another Bonds. Look how he beefed up in his golden years. I don't think he is going to be the salvation that the best team money can buy thinks he's gonna be. I can't stand the Yankees and I hope they continue to embarras themselves by spending above all reason and keep falling flat on their faces and look like total asses for the spend spend spend mentality and get spanked in the playoffs. That's if they even make it to the post season. Go Boston!!!!!!!!!!

That's it. I've had it.
I'm a lifelong Yankee fan, and I'm all done.
George, you've finally put the last straw on the camel's back.
To bring on this travesty of a human being is outrageous.
First of all, I'm not sure if he'll be able to withstand the rigors of the REST of the season.
Secondly, the Yankees JUST BECAME the laughing stock of the 2007 season as far as any true baseball fan is concerned.
***Wait,I'm sorry... The Giants beat you to that when they signed that steroid loser who will have cheated his way to the most coveted record in all of sports.***
Lastly, you just sold your soul, Mr. Steinbrenner.
Roger will laugh at you all the way to the bank. He cares nothing of loyalty, of teammates, or of winning. He's proven that in the past.
He will not even be travelling to games to support his teammates if he's not pitching?!?!?!?!
With his experience, he SHOULD be there to
guide younger players.
That is the one thing that he has to offer if
he cannot give you 6 or 7 innings every 5 games!
I hope you lose the division by 50 games to ANYONE other than the Red Sox, who I still will not root for.
When this season is over, and, if your team does
not win AGAIN, I expect to see you be honorable and take a full page ad out in the Times, apologizing to all of the loyal fans of the Yankees that you just insulted. Why didn't you sign Bonds and Sosa,
too, and complete the triumvirate of villians of baseball.
P.S. to Mr. Commissioner:If you do not push for some type of salary cap after this travesty, you will lose more fans than you know...

No doubt, Clemens is a mercenary, but how many people out there are taking less salary than they could get elsewhere out of loyalty to the corporation? I think Clemens was sincere when he went at home to Texas, but times change, people change.
Frankly, I don't see the 'stros making a run at the Braves, the Cards or the Mets any time soon, Clemens or not, but maybe the Rocket can be the difference maker in the Bronx. At this stage of his career, why shouldn't Clemens be allowed to do stuff just for the hell of it?
The Yankees paid Pavano 8 million bucks a win for his brief tenure on the Yankees, and now Carl continues his quest to become the gold standard of the DL Hall of Fame. By that measure, even if Clemens gives Torre and the boys ten wins, he's a bargain.

Roger Clemmons should have retired last year. Even after sitting out the first three months of the season, he remained hurt most of the rest of the season. I hope the Yankees get their money's worth out of him, the Astros sure didn't last year.

Hey Joe C., you are a Yankee fan, and the kind of yankee fan I like, a true BASEBALL fan, that was the smartest thing I read or heard by a yankee fan ever.Clemens says he is retiring, then signs with Houston, and NYY fans welcome him back with open arms???I don't get it. I hate Clemens more than Bonds, whose to say Clemens never took steriods??Look at his transformation. Bud Selig needs to create rules that makes a pitcher stay with the team...thats why its called a team.

Inside of New York, too!
I am an avid Yankees fan, and I can tell you I'm really sick of Roger Clemens and his BS. For all the talk about how great he was, in the AL, he was decent. Nothing amazing. And all he did was turn his back on the Yanks (like he does to every team) and lie (like he does to every team) about his "retirement." Then, when he's happy he goes out and pitches to a 1.80 ERA? Really, Roger? Where was that in New York?
Not to mention, from a fan's standpoint... we KNOW this move was made out of desperation, but is he the answer? He is NOT going to travel if he can help it. He is NOT going to be in the locker room on many occasions. How can that possibly help team chemistry? Or did management forget that baseball is a TEAM sport, and that individuals do not win championships?
Very disappointing.... Let's Go Yanks! Clemens... well whatever - don't screw this up for us

There are people I unquestionably despise. They lack morals, character, and honesty. They snooker people of every stripe into believing that the Earth is flat. In case you can't tell, I'm talking about Roger Clemens here. You see, I obviously believe that it is not difficult to see the undercurrents of careerism in Roger's plans for the future. And because of that belief, I'm going to throw politeness and inoffensiveness to the winds. In this letter, I'm going to be as rude and crude as I know how, to reinforce the point that there is a proper place in life for hatred. Hatred of that which is wrong is a powerful and valuable tool. But when Roger perverts hatred in order to promote the sort of behavior that would have made the folks in Sodom and Gomorrah blush, it becomes clear that when people say that bigotry and hate are alive and well, they're right. And Roger is to blame.
No amount of opinion or innuendo nor any string of unrelated excuses can change the fact that Roger's idiotic claim that the federal government should take more and more of our hard-earned money and more and more of our hard-won rights is just that, an idiotic claim. Roger's disciples consider his expostulations a breath of fresh air. I, however, find them more like the fetid odor of phallocentrism.
If I am correctly informed, part of the myth that Roger perpetuates is that self-satisfied boneheads are more deserving of honor than our nation's war heroes. In any case, Roger says that he needs a little more time to clean up his act. As far as I'm concerned, Roger's time has run out. Are you prepared to discuss this, Roger? Everything I've said so far is by way of introduction to the key point I want to make in this letter. My key point is that he's more than disaffected. Roger's mega-disaffected. In fact, to understand just how disaffected he is, you first need to realize that it would be wrong to imply that Roger is involved in some kind of conspiracy to use paid informants and provocateurs to develop a Pavlovian reflex in us, to make us afraid to work together towards a shared vision. It would be wrong because his screeds are far beyond the conspiracy stage. Not only that, but if he honestly believes that some of my points are not valid, I would love to get some specific feedback from him. Now, I don't mean for that to sound pessimistic, although to get even the simplest message into the consciousness of testy, pernicious bloodsuckers, it has to be repeated at least 50 times. Now, I don't want to insult your intelligence by telling you the following 50 times, but if Roger can't stand the heat, he should get out of the kitchen. I have a T-shirt emblazoned with the following inscription: "There should be a law against this." I like to wear that T-shirt to make a point about how Roger sees no reason why he shouldn't boss others around. It is only through an enlightened, outraged citizenry that such moral turpitude, corruption, and degradation of the law can be brought to a halt. So, let me enlighten and outrage you by stating that there's a time to keep silent and a time to speak. There's a time to love and a time to hate. There's a time for war and a time for peace. And, I aver, there's a time to draw a picture of what we conceive of under the word "anthropoteleological". Or, to put it less poetically, Roger can be so self-centered, it would take your breath away. Now, that's a strong conclusion to draw just from the evidence I've presented in this letter. So let me corroborate it by saying that if Roger doesn't realize that it's generally considered bad style to bring ugliness and nastiness into our lives, then he should read one of the many self-help books on the subject. I recommend he buy one with big print and lots of pictures. Maybe then, Roger will grasp the concept that he is driving me nuts. I can't take it anymore!

Ridiculous is the only word I can use to describe Clemens-haters. I am a Yankee fan and I loved seeing him (as a Blue Jay) stick it to the Boston organization who SHOWED HIM ZERO LOYALTY, BAD-MOUTHED HIM, AND TRIED TO RUIN HIS CAREER. Then the Yankees got him and he gave nothing less than 110%. I think he truly intended to retire and, while disappointed, was happy for him to be pitching in his home town for 2 years. I know he enjoys NYC (who doesn't- it's not like sleepy, boring Boston) always liked the Yankee organization, and is close to a lot of the players so, along with the money (which he would get anywhere), I think he made an honorable decision that is in his best interest. I'm happy to have him back and laugh in the faces of those who thumb their noses at players who get the most money they can get, especially Boston fans who can't stop talking about Matsusaka who they paid $100M+ for- where was his loyalty to his country and former organization?
