At the very least, he doesn't make a convincing case for his abilities in rhetoric. This video, in which Jonathan Papelbon institutes the rule that you shouldn't be able to use a word in conversation that you don't know how to spell -- a great rule, by the way -- is a fantastic little snippet of the rote conversation that apparently takes place frequently in the land of the Red Sox.
Not sure when this is, or why this conversation was recorded, but I'm glad it was. The way manager Terry Francona takes all of this in, and promptly asks the same question you'll be asking after you just watched the video, is perhaps the funniest part of the whole exercise. Enjoy.
It was recorded, because NESN wanted to get conversations by players during BP, and wanted to use clubhouse-funny-man Papelbon, to get some comedy going. The best part of the whole video NESN played, was: Papelbon: Ok, Josh, spell it Beckett: E-M-F... Shilling: Uhp, you're already wrong Papelbon: SEE! I TOLD YOU! YOU CAN'T USE A WORD YOU CAN'T SPELL! Shilling: It's E-M-P-H...
Or, actually. Another good part was when Papelbon was asking Oakjima why Japan is the land of the Rising Sun. And why Japan is the Far-East, and not the Close-West. Wakefield showed up into the convo and schooled EVERYONE in knowledge on this question

Why Francona doesn't have his own after-hours variety show on NESN is anybody's guess.
