Scott BorasI'm guessing Scott Boras doesn't have a lot of fans in the commissioner's office -- he's personally responsible for negotiating some of the biggest contracts in the history of baseball for his clients, driving up salaries while reducing profit margins for the owners.

But still, for whatever reason Boras figured Bud Selig might be interested in hearing his radical idea to "improve" baseball. According to Newsday, Boras sent the commissioner a letter outlining his suggestion to extend the World Series to a best-of-nine series, with the first two games played on a neutral field "to create an atmosphere similar to the Super Bowl."

Personally, I hate the idea, and not just because I'm some kind of baseball "purist." The last thing we need to do is draw out the World Series any longer -- as it is, this year's Game 7 is currently scheduled for November 1, which is preposterously late in the year to be playing a summer game. It just doesn't make sense that baseball champion is crowned for playing in wintry conditions that just don't exist for the vast majority of the regular season.

Boras had another suggestion that I'm all in favor of: revealing regular season awards all at once during a made-for-TV ceremony instead of simply distributing a series of press releases.
"We have to have the stars of our game noticed," said Boras ... "To deliver the awards through a wire service, I've never understood that."
I'd watch it, and I imagine most hard-core fans would, as well. MLB could put the show on regular cable right now and then move it over to the MLB Network, or whatever they end up calling their planned 24/7 baseball channel, in a few seasons.
