Back in December of 2004, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that former Oakland A's MVP first baseman, and current New York Yankees DH, Jason Giambi, told a federal grand jury that he used steroids and HGH. As a result, Giambi felt compelled to apologize in a news conference prior to the 2005 season, but he never specifically said what he was apologizing for. On Wednesday however, Giambi told USA Today that he did "stuff" and that baseball should have apologized for the steroid controversy it created."I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi told USA TODAY on Wednesday before playing the Chicago White Sox. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up - players, ownership, everybody - and said: 'We made a mistake.'Look, Jason Giambi may be just as guilty as anyone else -- gaining fame and glory from his use of illegal performance enhancing drugs, but at least he's not turning his back to the issue. Rather, Giambi is looking the issue straight in the face, forcing baseball to rethink the way it has handled things. So while Bud Selig continues to play the ignorance game, at least you have Jason Giambi who's wise enough to realize an apology is needed. And as fans, I think it's safe to say that we deserve one."We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

You know, if Giambi just apologized and admitted that he used STEROIDS, I'd have forgiving him, but now he has to say "I USED STUFF" not "STEROIDS" and to top it off he's now down playing the drug that it did not effect a baseball players hitting and seeing the ball ability.
He's full of it dishonest and deserves no respect!!!

I applaud Giambi's appoligy on the use of steroids.
His appoligy stems from his good heart and love of the game of baseball and of it's future.

To be honest fans do not need an apology. We all knew they were taking something. I played a lot of sports and I saw people around me doing them. All sports have "Stuff" being taken. Everyone wanted longer homeruns, harder hits in football, and so on. Enhancers have been in sports since the 80's. Take a look at the teams in the early 90's. (Phillies 93) Fans that want an apology make me laugh and reporters that say they are surprised that people have been on the "Stuff" really don't know their job. I love sports that will not change but the fans have to understand that baseball is not the only sport with the problem. Once the "stuff" is tested and random than we will have cleaner sports, until someone finds the new "Balco". Why did they make rules that you can not cork a bat or scuff a ball, because people did it. It was not considered cheating until a rule was in place. Now the rule is in place, let's just play ball.

Giambi is not sorry. he is still using "stuff". rememeber when he stopped after the Balco leak? then the weight lose and "injuries", the horrible slump he was in; so bad the Yankees were going to send him the the minors? he was shown on TV almost in tears begging them not to ship him out and then the sudden improvement in hitting and simultaniously getting bigger again? do you think he got that way from eating his spinach?

I am a Red Sox fan and I think the only class guy in the steroid era has been Jason Giambi. He admitted, apologized and has worked hard to rebuild his body naturally and has re-adjusted and become once again a great player. I remember when he struggled after he stopped the steroids and I thought he was all done, to my surprise he came back to be a very solid hitter and I salute the guy. He is the only class guy in the steroid era. We all should forgive a sinner who admits his sins and repents. This member of the Red Sox Nation believes in forgiveness and he is the only player who deserves it.

I commend Jason Giambi for coming clean and apologizing. I agree that MLB needs to own up and start over again with mandatory blood testing for all banned substances. Not just a urine test for steroids. Good for Giambi that he's willing to stand up and admit a mistake. The fact that he apologized goes a long way in improving his image. He's taken a lot of heat, over the years, from non-Yankee fans. I've changed my opinion of him. It takes a big man to admit wrongdoing and apologize for it. Hopefully this will quell the "Balco" chants he hears at every away game. Hmmm, I don't sound like a Red Sox fan......

Give Jason Giambi credit. He at least admitted using steroids. He is not on the verge of breaking any record like Mr. Bonds. Mr Bubblehead has no qualms about breaking Hank Aaron's home run record even though he was knee deep in using steroids. He shames baseball and he should be booed out of the game by any fan that loves the game.

Mr Giambi at least admitted his use of steroids not like Mr Bubblehead who is about to break the all time home run record. Mr Bonds shames baseball everytime he swings a bat and the people who root for him shame themselves.

I think that the owners do owe the fans an apology. I hate this illegal drug usage, but if I want to watch baseball....what choice do I have?

At least we have 1 real man in this league that can admit to his mistakes...We all know almost the entire league was juiced up for quite some time. It did make the MLB quite fun to watch I must admit.

If MLB players were sincere they would agree to HGH testing. As of now, the players union will not allow the test. HGH is the "steroid", now.

Nice to see the sentiment here RE: OF COURSE NOT ! Apology by MLB would be a joke at best, insulting more likely. As many have noted, all but the totally ignorant knew what was going on in sports! We do not deserve nor need an "apology". Individual players want to step forward to feel better about themselves so be it. Spare Me!

artistjohnfanning,
It's a misquote by Larry Brown (how unusual!). Giambi is quoted in the USA Today as saying he did "that stuff," not "stuff," meaning performance enhancing drugs, in other words, not only steroids but HGH and the whole cornucopia. He confessed in full to the grand jury. And it doesn't affect one's ability to see the ball or make contact. Sheesh.

I'm on the same page with posters such as Fansdontknow, A.C., Rusty and SportSnipe. I don't need any apology from the baseball organization. Just own up and start fresh, with fresh rules and clear understandings. Good for Jason Giambi for speaking out. He has my admiration for his comments. P.S., I'm a big Yankees fan, don't diss me, lol. I would have made the same comment if it were any other baseball player who spoke up.
