Earlier today, fellow FanHouse scribe PostmanE asked whether or not the punishment fit the crime for Lou Piniella and his four-game suspension. Well, continuing along the suspension wavelength here, Phillip Wellman, he of rosin-bag-grenade-throwing fame, received a three-game suspension from the major league version of the Braves. Now, if you're wondering why Piniella's outburst -- which was rather mild compared to Wellman's, even though he made contact with an umpire -- seems a bit disproportionate as far comparing suspensions is concerned, it's because the Braves handed down the suspension to Wellman, not baseball.
According to the AP article, even if he was suspended or fined by baseball, the public won't be informed about it.
Wellman and the club declined comment, spokesman Nicholas Skinner said.Um, Southern League executives, I think you are missing the ball here. Instead of fining or suspending Wellman, you should probably be capitalizing on this somehow. I'm thinking a reality show with Ozzie Guillen, Piniella and Bobby Cox.
A Southern League executive declined to talk about a likely suspension or fine.
"The league president is working on that right now," said Lori Webb, vice president of operations. "Obviously appropriate action will be taken, but nothing will be released to the public about that."
It would be like "Survivor" only more hot dogs, confusion and overweight people.
(Also: After the jump, I threw up the video of Wellman's tirade. Once wasn't enough for me. I hope you feel the same way.)
