According to published reports, Sam Perlozzo has just earned the unenviable distinction of being the first major league manager to be fired this year. He lasted less than two seasons on the job, posting a 122-164 record after taking over for Lee Mazzilli late in the 2005 season. Things have gone especially bad this season, with the Orioles riding an eight-game losing streak into sole possession of last place in the AL East. Needless to say, it's not like people didn't see this coming. So who takes over? For the time being, it's bullpen coach Dave Trembley, who lacks any big-league managing experience but was a long-time skipper in the minor leagues. He'll wear the "interim" tag for the time being -- perhaps until former Marlins manager and current Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi, considered the top name on the O's short list, accepts the job. Making Perlozzo the fall guy wasn't the only change in Baltimore: well-traveled exec Andy MacPhail was also named the team's new COO. Good decision? Tough call. As Baseball Musings points out:
During MacPhail's twelve seasons running the Cubs (1995-2006), Chicago's record was 916-1011, a .475 winning percentage, 22nd in the majors. Twenty third were the Orioles at 911-1014, .473. If they're going to hire someone new, shouldn't it be someone with a track record that's different from your team's own history?Time will tell, though it's not like there are very many great baseball minds out there currently unemployed.

If it's Girardi, we'll see if his time in Florida was a fluke or not. How about Mazzilli, part 2? It's too bad regardless who the O's hire, they'll be fired anyway. Leo Mazzone should have been the one who got the ax. Baltimore's pitching stinks and this pitching "guru" did nothing to make it any better.

They need to fire ANgelos as owner of the team. He refuses to fork over any money to get more great players. How would it be if Cal Ripken (with help) boughtthe team?

You can't blame the mgr., when the team continues get has been players for its pitching staff..........
Why do you think their teams let them go; Benson, Taschel, Williams and a few others...... Get in the market and get some quality star players..... The Orioles are not a bad team, they need some help..Rebuild the farm system like Harry Dalton and Paul Richards did in the old days......Leo Mazzone is one of the best pitching coaches around and so was Ray Miller........ YOU NEED PITCHING!!!!!!!! Also we need to reshuffle the front office...... The Cubs and the Birds are a good match both in the same position.....Cant blame sweet Lou for poor playing.......Nor can you blame Sam..That's just the way it goes....... Rick Dempsey or Tremblehorn would be good candidates for Skipper......All the best for the Orioles......... Go after Texas's 1st baseman for some power and bring up some farm team players and start to rebuild for 2008.This year is shot.......Sorry!!!!!!!!!!

Hey wildman-
YOu are an absolute ignorant baseball fan who shouldn't be allowed to post comments on here. You said, "Baltimore's pitching stinks and this pitching "guru" did nothing to make it any better."
Are you serious?? Baltimore's starting pitching is top 5 in the league- and that's AFTER losing Kris Benson and Adam Loewen for the year. Baltimore's starting pitching has been magnificent all year- and were it not for a lack of clutch hitting and a disastrous bullpen- the Orioles would be in the thick of it. The Orioles are a mess and have lost, probably more heart-breaking games htis year than any team in any sport's history... but you obviously have not watched a single one of them or you'd know it has nothing tod o with out starting pitching staff- because there are after-all- who mazzone has been mentoring. Get a clue- and don't post when you have no knowledge on the subject in question!

Not until owner Peter Angelos decides to spend some $$$ on some in-their-prime,big-time players and not worry so much about skewing his salary structure, the O's will continue their AL East mediocrity. Got to love that the no-name Washington Nationals swept them last week!

I only wish someone would wake up and figure a way to get Cal Ripken to take over the team make things better. With NO experience I am sure that within 2-3 years we would be a winner once again. Angelos would have to stay out of the decisions and that won't happen. I believe that Mike Flannagan has the teams best interest and betwen he and Cal they could turn this team to the old glory days past....

Someone needs to take control of that clubhouse, and it starts with getting rid of losers like Millar.

The Oriole Franchise is a "rudderless ship" and can ONLY be improved if the owner sells the team to someone (Cal Ripken) who is sincerely interested in baseball, not an ego. Firing Perlozzo was inevitable, and no matter who was appointed to the position would have been a failure due to the circumstances of an impulsive owner. There is no leadership in management, the team, clubhouse, nor the minor leagues. As an Oriole fan for 54 years, I am embarassed, disappointed, and thoroughly disgusted. Sell the team to the people of Baltimore...they will insure that we have a 500. season which would be a gross improvement over the the last 9 years.

I agree with getitng rid of the slimeball Angelos, he has done nothing for the team. As a lifelong Orioles fan, I know when they had a bette rowner they did better, but with Angelos they havenm't done squat due to his arrogance. It6s time for Baltimore fans to chase Angelos out of town for once and for all.

I believe that sam should have stayed and that there should've been move to have a C.O.O that runs the team. Perlozzo did what he could and barring a few bad moves with the bullpen, he put the right guys out there daily. they should be at least 8 to 10 games above 500..
