A fantastic column from the Baltimore Sun's Roch Kubatko discusses interim Orioles' manager Dave Trembley's big opportunity -- the chance to manage a Major League Baseball team after 22 years of assistant positions and minor league spot jobs. Kubatko conveys just how lucky Trembley realizes he is -- even to be an interim manager -- before discussing Trembley's effect on the locker room:
The clubhouse seems a bit looser these days, even with the Orioles still mired in last place. And especially after Saturday's loss, when Trembley broke through the silence by insisting that the players turn on the television, get something to eat and talk among themselves like grown men.So, can Trembley keep his job? Can he drop the "interim" in his title and just be the O's manager? At this point, if Trembley can keep things moving forward in Baltimore, Andy MacPhail is probably best to keep Trembley on for the rest of the year. Financially, he doesn't have to spend money on a new hire that would likely have little effect on Baltimore's losing ways, and he can give Trembley the full audition he seems to truly deserve.
"When I was done, a couple guys stood up and said, 'Hey, Dave, thanks,' " Trembley said. "I feel like I've got them. I feel like they trust me."
