Coach: "So you're saying right there that he's safe?" Ump: "Yeah." Coach: "But you called him out for the hell of it?" Ump: "Yeah, I did."
Umm, file that conversation under "things an umpire shouldn't be caught dead saying." I don't have a clue what level of baseball this is -- my best guess is that it's either the low minors or college -- but this guy shouldn't be allowed to umpire Little League, let alone grown men. Is it as bad as shaving points? No, but any umpire who puts his pride over the rulebook is tainting the integrity of the game nonetheless.
That man shouldn't even be allowed to watch a game. There is no room in sport at any level to allow a man with a vendetta to umpire or referee a game. What is that teaching our kids at the lower level of ball about honesty or any other value.
As an umpire myself, the level (minor leauge, college, etc.) in which this man is judging the game is not important, in my opinion. What is pertinent is the fact that he doesn't appear to care enough. Every call I make is done to the best of my ability with absolute fairness. I think it is time for him to hang up the ball bag and retire!
Umpires put up with a lot of negative crap from coaches, playrs, and fans. It comes with the job and in a lot of cases justified. But purposely failing to do the job properly and fairly is a terrible thing to do on any level of play. Any one in any job situation that failed to do thier duties properly would be fired and the incident would be on their work record. Thats what should happen here. Unfortunately his call could have had an effect on the game that can't be corrected at a later date. When umpires make vindictive calls they steal from players and fans.
This has been going on for years. When are people going to wake up? i.e. Black Sox, College point shaving (basketball), Paul Horning-Alex Karrus, Marlins World Series (Remember Eric Greggs strike zone. Where is Eric NOW?????????) The only chance you gamblers have is to figure who who the bad guys want to win. It's not going to end!
When are you people going to learn Black Sox, College point shaving (basketball), Paul Horning-Alex Karris, Why did Kofax really retire? Marlins World Series Champs, remember Eric Greggs strikezone in the NLCS (Where is Eric now?) It's here and will never leave. The only chance you gamblers have is to figure who the bad guys want to win and go with it.
I umped for 25 years and never saw this. Yes he should be fired. BUT, I bet I know what happened and we only got part of the story: umps will do make-up calls. If he called somebody safe earlier, and he shouldnt have, he might have been calling him out to get the game right. It's wrong, but some umps feel they are correcting an error they made. This usually happens in rec ball, not the pros where this guy is.
This happened in Midwest League (Low Class A) in 2001. The umpire's name is Erik Stahlbusch. He continued to ump in Class A through the 2007 season, but effectively doomed himself to never advance above Class A.
ddavis, when are YOU people going to learn to keep your paranoid fantasy bullcrap to Area 51 and Michael Moore blogs? This was pure and simple a case of a guy being an ass (the player) and the umpire getting him back by being a bigger ass.

Wow, it's hard to believe a conversation like that even took place. The umpire was just plain ridiculous.
