Last week the US Army hosted a "Reds' Legends Baseball Camp" for kids in the Cincinnati area. Given the name and all, they invited a bunch of Reds' legends to come and talk to the collection of 7-to-14 year olds assembled. Apparently, they thought it was a good idea to invite Pete Rose to come talk. It wasn't. "It was a complete embarrassment," said Staff Sgt. Steven Tischer, commander of the Colerain-Highland Ridge U.S. Army Recruiting Station that sponsored the baseball camp for 7- to 14-year-olds. "You don't swear in front of kids, that's just common sense. He dropped the F-bomb and the S-bomb. He told them winning is everything and if you get second place you're just losers."
I asked Tischer about Rose's July 26 visit after getting an e-mail from Renee Collins of Mason, who went to the camp with her son and some of his teammates.
"It was such a great week," she said. "My son goes to camps a lot and this was by far the best. It was so wonderful except for that one hour."
Now I don't mean to be critical, but what good could possibly come from inviting Pete Rose to speak at a baseball camp for kids? Yeah, yeah, Charlie Hustle and all that, I know. But the guy has a bit of a reputation for lying, gambling, and lots of other things that aren't good for a 7-to-14 year-old baseball camp. What did they think was going to happen?

Pete Rose did something wrong? Pete Rose curses? How can the camp be that stupid? I am surprised he didn't get the cards out and show them all how to deal f______ black jack.
Let's see, what was that other guy's name, who used to swear a lot and drink booze like a fish, and was one of the greatest ball players of the game. Oh yeah, Babe Ruth comes to mind. Seems like there are a lot of ball players who had - and have problems with booze, drugs, four language, gambling and lying. Great role models for kids. Most adults find casual use of foul language offensive; unfortunately our moral values have diminished significantly since the 1960's (when drugs and flower power became common place). The flower children of the 60's, and their values, have become our leaders of today. When you invite a pro ball player to address any audiance, you should anticipate some colorful language. Remember John Riggins of the Washington Redskins telling our first female Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor to "Loosen up Baby" just before he passed out and fell head first over the table of honor.

I was very disappointed in Pete Rose, as I have been many times in the past. He may have been one of the greatest baseball players in his day and I cheered for him then. Now heis just a looser as a person. Look at baseball as a whole. The platers, for the most part, are a bunch of rude, crude, dumb-asses. Certanly not the type most parents would want their daughters or sons associationg with, well, except those that just see the dollar signs. This being said, as long as Pete Rose is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame, I will NEVER visit there. I point out to my kids what a bunch of scum most professional athletes are and encourage them to strive for something better.

When Phila. brought Pete in for a run at the pennant,everyone here applauded the effort. We wouldn't have been in the world series let alone won without him ! That said, I had occasion to observe him at a restaurant and saw a child approach for an autograph. Didn't hear what was said, but my waiter told me the boy was sent back to his dad for five dollars !
This article does surprize me at all. I grew up in the Phildephia area in the 80's and remember how rude Mr. Rose was to fans. There is a reason for everything, and his behaviors are the reason he is not hall of fame material.

A foul man, a foul mouth, was in Hawaii in the 70's as a united states marine,was at 1976 hawaii all star games and pete rose jumped all over 7 year old for asking for his autograph. have disliked pete rose ever since..... what a shmuck....!
Pete Rose is a jerk, plain and simple. He obviously has no social graces, and the last people he should be around are children. He's white trash.
I'll start watching baseball again when there's a player in the league that plays as hard as Pete did.
What about Juan Marichal...he busted a catcher in the head with a baseball bat DURING A GAME..and he still is in the hall of fame..Pete bet on baseball, minor compared to smashing a bat in someone elses head..Pete deserves to be in the hall of fame, regardless whether he is a jerk or not.
