Now that Barry has finally passed Hank Aaron-congratulations, Barry-we can all just go back to watching baseball. Just to make things clear on my feelings towards Barry and this record, I don't like Barry, but I don't hate him either. Am I upset that he's broken Hank's record? Not really. I never saw Hank Aaron play, and I have no personal connection to his record. It doesn't cause me great pain to see the record broken by Bonds, because in my lifetime I haven't seen many players better than Barry Bonds. You know who doesn't quite feel the same way about this as I do? Former Atlanta Brave Dale Murphy. He's not particularly happy.
"Barry's a great player, there's no question about it, but he put an asterisk by his name on his own," Murphy said Monday on AM radio 1280 The Show. "He's deserved all the negative publicity that he's getting. I mean, people are calling up and complaining, I've heard the last few weeks, that that he's being treated unfairly. You know, life just usually isn't like that. You don't usually get treated unfairly. You usually get what you deserve. This is what Barry deserves. He's a hard guy to like. He's a hard teammate to have and, you know, he's set a terrible example for our kids."Gee, Dale. How do you really feel?
Murphy went on to say during the interview that Hank Aaron would have hit 855 home runs had he been doing the same things that Barry Bonds did. So I guess in a way, we can say it's all Hank Aaron's fault that Bonds broke his record, because Hank was never smart enough to use steroids.
Wow, Hank, you really dropped the ball on that one.

It must be pretty difficult for a wealthy retired professional athlete to say that people usually get what they deserve in life.

What Murphy says is useless. He is a racist from the word go. Bonds has not proven for using anything at this point and time and personally, I believe that he never used anything but his natural talent of which Mr. Murphy doesn't have.

Its about time a real baseball player stood up and said the right thing. Its a disgrace that they let this bullshit go on.with this the children will think it is ok to do drugs to get ahead in life.bud and all of baseball should be ashamed for letting this go on.it should have been stopped a long time ago.iI am sick to my stomach you (the officials of baseball)didn't stop it.bonds is a drug addict and should be thrown out of baseball to set an example to the rest of the player that if you do drugs or steroids(there is no differents)you will be punished.
shame shame shame.i don't even want to watch and my children and grandchildren will not watch.I could stand on some streets in my town if I want to see junkies and it don't cost me a penny.thank you murphy
you shed some hope that there is stll hope.

Charlie, can you say with any certainty that Dale Murphy didn't use? Can you say with any certainty that Dale Murphy or Hank Aaron didn't play with a corked bat? Or can you say with certainty that Aaron could've kept up with a steadier barrage of harder fastballs thrown by pitchers who also used steroids?
It's not like Bonds is the first cheater. I bet there are a ton of 500+ HR guys from the good ole' days that found some way to cheat, whether from a juiced-up bat or, who knows, maybe they knew about some kind of performance supplement that nobody else knew about that might be considered illegal today.
In other words, nothing is more ridiculous than former players using the "holier than thou" argument. A good chunk of players have cheated, and that includes old timers too.

The greatest baseball player to ever put on cleats. Here we are talking about homeruns. What about the 232 walks Barry had one season, the 8 golden gloves, the consistency he's had since the days of the Pittsburgh Pirates where he also won the MVP award...twice. A member of the 40-40 club. Barry has been consistent since day one. Did steroids made him achieve all these numbers, I don't think so. I don't care who you are, you still have to hit the ball in order to hit it out the ballpark and when it comes to having eye to hand coordination nobody has that gift like Barry Bonds. When it comes to negativity americans and most of the world always looks for someone to blame. Barry weighed 180 pounds when he started with the Pirates. Now 40 or so pounds and 20 years later and can't believe people still want Barry to weigh 180 pounds. Take a look back at 20 years, did you still look or weigh the same as you were nack then? I don't think so. This steroid thing is bigger than Barry Bonds. Lets look at his all around stats, from at bats, to batting avg., to o.b.p., to walks, etc. etc. there will never be no one near the talent that God has given Barry Bonds. If you look at the people that are talking garbage about this man it's mostly caucasian people and the ratio is like a 100 to 1. Does this sound like racism or haterism, you make the call.

I don't get it. Seriously, I really don't get it. Why aren't all fans excited about this astonishing feat? Is it really all about steroids? Even if he did use them, IT HASN'T BEEN PROVEN. The hatred displayed is worldwide. There just can't be that many people who actually believe Bonds should be condemned for an unproven accusation or who are jealous. There has to be more to it, and I want to know what it is.

Amazing...only in this country can you "cheat" and still be admired. No question that Bonds was a great player...1990-2004...he has stayed in the game for only "personal" gain the last 3 years and has hurt the Giants on the field. For almost his entire career he has been hard to deal with in the media and the fan...and now we should embrace him? Kudos to Dale Murphy for saying what so many people feel but can not say..I guess Murphy is a racist because he has an opinion...

To Stanley W. Rankin-- You are a racist yourself, and an idiot to boot. Dale Murphy is about as much as a racist as Mother Teresa. This man is just expressing an opinion and played with Henry Aaron so I believe he has a pretty good insight into this controversy. To make this issue a matter of race is inane. Grow up Mr. Rankin and view this issue in black and white terms (pun intended). It is not a race issue as it seemed to be in Henry Aaron's case.

Corngrats are in order to Mr Barry Bonds. He has the eclipsed the "greatest" of the "great" in the MLB home run arena by hitting "756" home runs. The absence of Hank and Bud didn't negate his accomplishment, but rather highlighted their "small mindness." In their minds Mr Bond is guilty. Even though no person or modern thechnology has found the infallable evidence of Mr Bond use of performance enhancing drugs. Where is the evidence? The found it concerning the Olympic athletes and the Tour of D'France, but not Mr Bonds. Why?
Mr Bonds was accused of "juicing" by some glory seeking non-sports writer. Since those accusations were made against Mr Bond by his critics (sports writers who cannot get interviews, comments or what they call the real inside story)he has continued to hit balls out of various parks thrown by various MLB pitchers. This fact does not consider the intentional walks he has been given over his career.
It was comical when some "alleged sports commentator" tiled two photos of Mr Bond. One photo showed him as a young player with the Pirates and the other as he was four years ago and cited his build as her concrete evidence of his use of drugs. I would like to have seen a photo of her as young woman and compare it to her now. She has more mass now than then...and it's not the result of drug use. Some cite his ability at his age. I am fifty six (56) years of age and I can still "bench press" 350lbs and walk six miles in 1.5hrs. I have never "juiced" in my life.
My suggestion to all the critics deliver the evidence or S/U!

I think this whole issue is showing kids that there is a big problem with steroids. Without all the hype surrounding Bonds I would imagine a lot more kids would be tempted to use without knowing how dangerous they are. Also, why isn't anyone addressing another substance abuse problem in the sport, speed or amphetimines? That is a serious problem that still goes on today.

Why I expected the Bonds argument to get any more sophisticated today, I do not know. But Bonds defenders can be boiled down to this:
1) You have no definitive proof that everyone else wasn't using too.
2) Absent definitive proof everyone else wasn't using, it therefore is unfair to single out Barry Bonds, even if you have reams of evidence (and there is, please do read Game of Shadows) that he did.
3) There are lots of assholes in the game, which makes Barry's cheating both acceptable and admirable.
4) Anyone who points out Bonds' shortcomings is a racist.
5) The entire case against Bonds is built not on fact or observable evidence but on racism and jealousy.
Ad nauseam.
He cheated. End of story.
