The Giants were surprised they had to defend themselves against rumors, repeated on talk shows Wednesday, that they had to compensate a reluctant Aaron for his 51-second message. Executive vice president Larry Baer said there was no compensation and no reluctance from Aaron. You know what, I can buy that. Hank says he's as happy for Barry as anybody, and it is understandable that he couldn't travel around the country waiting for Bonds to hit home runs. Recording a video message seems like a reasonable solution, and I can buy that he wasn't bribed into doing it.The genesis of Aaron's message was a phone call from Baer in mid-May. The Giants had heard Aaron wanted nothing to do with Bonds' pursuit of the record, Baer said, but he decided he wanted to hear it from Aaron.
"When I spoke to Hank, I said I understood he didn't want to come to San Francisco and follow Barry around, that it would be burdensome, and he didn't want to answer questions about 756 and dredge up 1974," Baer said. "I said, 'If that's the case, how about sending a message to Barry and for baseball,' and he said, 'Absolutely, I'd be willing to do that.' "

Hank Aaron probably had to swallow his pride that an alledged cheater broke his home run record. It was the right thing to do instead of chasing Barry Bonds like a shadow and personally congraulate him.

This rumor is based on the fact that people can't deal with the fact that a lot of people still like Barry. He was voted onto the All Star team by the fans, and they cheered him in San Diego. Most fans have moved on. It is mainly the media and a small percentage of fans that keep this stuff going. But he still keeps hitting them out.

Let's put things in perspective.
1. Bonds is certainly "clean" now... right? Does anyone think he's not being tested, watched?
2. He's the most walked player in the Majors. Nobody wants to give one up to him, especially before the record was broken.
3. He's 43
4. Check and see who the leaders in homers this season in both the NL and AL.
5. He's clean, getting pitched around, 43 y/o, and #9 in homers hit this season.

You got it right.... ALLEGED. Last time I looked the best evidence against the man was a book based on innuendno and "leaked" grand jury testimony. The facts are that Bonds is the best baseball player in our lifetimes.

it is totally rediculous the anyone would question hank aarons' integity. its the usual racism and bigotry of many in this country plus the media that only want to sell stories to a gullible reader. i don't blame aaron for not wanting to dredge up the past. these fools have a lot of gall to point fingers, when they probably cheat at something every day of the week, at work , home, play etc.

Hats off to all of you fans who have choosen to disregard the negative attempts by the media to sell news (most of which are by representatives that have not played a sport beyond the playround level). 30 years ago they said that Hank Aaron would never be the true homerun king. He endured threats on his life and constant racial taunts on the ballfield. Now he is held in very high regard. Now the media is saying that Barry Bonds does not deserve to hold the record because he alledgedly used steriods. No proof, just speculation and rumors... What the Babe, Hank, Barry and (Josh Gibson) have done is amazing. We should appreciate it for what it is - a remarkable accomplishment in a game that very few can play at that level. Barry deserves all of the accolades that the baseball public can give him. He is and has been good for the game.

Anybody who believes that Barry Bonds did not take steroids should not be driving anything larger than a tricycle and certainly should not be voting in any election except the one for second grade class president.
Anybody who thinks that Barry Bonds would have broken Aaron's record without using steroids needs merely to look at his statistics before he turned 36 and his statistics after age 36. His top five slugging percentages were at the ages of 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40. If he had continued to hit home runs at the same rate he did between the ages of 27 - 35 (his prime) he'd be almost 100 short of Aaron right now.
Now, throw in the fact that (1) he testified that he may have unwittingly used steroids thinking it was flaxseed oil, (2) his mistress has stated that he told her he was using steroids, (3) the change in his physical appearance is consistent with the use of steroids, and (4) his personal trainer would rather sit in prison than testify, and what conclusion can be drawn?

Oh My God-Barry is bigger than when he was a boy. It must be steroids-RIGHT??? Get a life people. Barry has never once tested positive for ANY banned or illegal substance and that is all that matters legally. Does a player getting bigger really mean steroids? Only a fool would answer yes to that question. Look at people through history who lived a good life, worked out religiously, ate a proper diet and actually put on bulk and muscle. Do you think they were doing steroids a hundred years ago??? A thousand years ago??? People have always had the opportunity to bulk up and put on muscle as they age if they were willing to push their bodies to the limit and and then try to push it a little further. I myself can easily put on 20-25 lbs. when I am seriously working out when we have a slow season at work and then slim back down when work picks back up. Barry works out year round-daily. I for one believe he did nothing wrong because there is no evidence to prove otherwise. If there was evidence to the contrary, he would have already been indicted instead of prosecutors still running around trying to get somebody to say something they can twist around to implicate him. It ain't happening.
Does anybody even care that Babe Ruth was usually drunk or hungover while playing? He sure loved his booze and cigars. A fine physical specimen he was-no control, no discipline-exactly the opposite of the way Barry Bonds lives.
Oh, I know-booze and cigars are legal and steroids are not. Remember-Barry has never tested positive for steroids and therefore does not appear to have used anything illegal.

I certainly don't think that Hank Aaron would lower himself to taking bribes. What hogwash! The damn media will concoct anything to sell their rag. I don't know if Barry Bonds used steroids or not. All I know is that nobody has ever proved that he has. So I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. One more thing. Somebody said that steroids don't help hit home runs. It's all about the eye co ordination and timing. Barry Bonds.....the greatest home run hitter of all times...You go Barry

Martin- you're wasting your time. The people who blindly support Bonds aren't interested in facts. Their hero broke the record. That's all they care about. They also don't care about the fact that Bonds is a pompous jerk who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire. It's interesting that their home run king is currently being investigated by a federal grand jury for possible perjury in his testimony during the Balco Laboratories scandel. On Feb.19, 2006, in an interview with USA Today, Bonds stated that he planned on retiring at the end of the 2006 season- with or without the homerun record. He was quoted as saying, "I've never cared about records anyway, so what difference does it make? Right now, I'm telling you, I don't even want to play next year." Some class, huh? Even if there wasn't a steroid scandel, the majority of baseball fans would not be happy for him.

Barry has been an exceptional player in my opinion as far back as his days with the pirates, along with his teammate Bobby Bo the two better known in those days as the killer B's.If he did or did'nt use steroids that has yet to be proven. His head size has increased is an argument the media has used to justify one of the main reasons why it a fact that he has used steroids, well I'm 60 years old and so has my head and my waist and my arms. Let's face it you guys just hate bonds because he did'nt suck up to you guys when you wanted a story for you sports page like eddy murray did'nt for years. come on fest up deep down inside you guys love bonds most of you guys dedicated you entire three to four hour sport talk shows to barry bonds the day after #756 forget about the hottest storys in sports michael vicks dog fighting and illegal betting in the NBA by a top official I wonder why? And one other thing is'nt baseball just entertainment like pro wrestling it just does'nt have a script it's played from the heart, the same as going to you favorite concert and afterwards you say to your friends was'nt that a great show I'll go again even if the guy was stoned or high on something thats illegal it's just entertainment.Remember the conversation Howard Rollins had with the white captain in the movie the"The soldier story" at the very end when the white captain says to Rollins while ridding in his jeep do you want a lift Rollins accepts jumps in and the captains says it's going to be hard getting use to black officers in the army Rollins replys "Oh you'll get use to it you can bet your sweet ass on that". Get use to Barry being the all time home run hitter it's a fact jack.

I liked what Hammerin' Hank had to say--it was real eloquent stuff. But why'd he look all green like a Martian. You kind of wished the people taking care of the video feed would have done a much better job. It was almost painful to watch a green Hank Aaron.

Why bring race into this? Every time there is any egative about a black person in the national limelight it is race related. God! I am tired of this! Barry brought a lot of this negative stuff on himself with his arrogant-surly attitude. He is a great player, period. Hats off to Barry. Steroids do not make hand to eye coordination any better. Steroids were not illegal and he never tested positive for any illegal subatance nor did McGuire. Both should just admit it and move on.
