Delmon Young Gets Yanked for "Disrespecting the Game"

Nothing like a profanity-filled tirade to cap a season. Like the one Devil Rays outfielder Delmon Young launched yesterday after being pulled from a game by manager Joe Maddon.

Maddon accused Young of disrespecting the game by not running out a ground ball during yesterday's match-up against the Blue Jays. Young responded with a verbal carpet bombing, claiming he'd been unfairly singled out, and saying he was pulling himself out of today's season finale

"S---, everybody else is m-----f------ doing it," Young said. "S---, I'm the only one who m-----f------ gets in trouble for the s---. ... I play every day. I don't complain about going out there. So, I'll see you guys next year. I'm shut down for (today)."

Maddon stuck to his guns, explaining that The Game is bigger than even one of his team's best players.

"I'm not angry, I'm not upset, I'm disappointed," Maddon said. "That is my major rule among position players, just to run hard to first base. I believe this: when you run hard to first base every time you put the ball in play, that permeates your entire game. That makes you a better player. For us, for the Rays, we're going to run hard to first."

For a guy who seemed a sure contender for AL Rookie of the Year accolades, Young didn't do himself any favors with this outburst. It will be interesting to see how this bizarre finish to his 2007 season influences voters.

to Mike and Jerry.....my sentiments exactly. These ghetto people feel they are exempt from decent behavioral standards.....they, like most of the NBA and NFL people should stay in the ghetto and not expose their ugly characters and personalities to the rest of society. Sports figures are role models for the youth of our country. It is no wonder that we are headed in the wrong direction. As Simon and Garfunkel once said...."Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio".....

addendum: why bother to fine these animals and give them second chances? Will make no difference. They all, including their shining light Michael Vick should be expelled from professional sports and sent back to the gutters and slums....where they belong.

ALL BALL PLAYERS SHOULD RUN HARD ON EVERY PLAY. THEY ARE GETTING PAID WELL TO PLAY A GAME. IT IS NOT OVERBEARING TO ASK THEM TO PLAY HARD EVERYTIME. REYES,AND MILLEGE DID THE SAME THING IN NEW YORK AND I BLAME THE COACH, RANDOLPH FOR IT. THE COACH SHOULD HAVE MADE IT A POINT EVERYDAY THAT LAZINESS AND SHOW BOATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN A BALL PLAYER HIT A BALL AND LOOK AT IT AND NOT RUN TO FIRST HARD AND FIND OUT IT IS NOT A HOME RUN AND ONLY WINDS UP AS A SINGLE WHERE IF HE RAN HARD WOULD HAVE MADE IT TO SECOND BASE. BARRY BONDS DID IT REPEATEDLY AND GOT AWAY WITH IT SINCE MANAGEMENT LET IT HAPPEN. BRING BACK THE OLD DAYS OF THE 40S AND 50S WHERE PLAYERS PLAYED HARD AND WERE NOT SPOILED. UNTIL THE GAME IS PLAYED THEY WAY IT SHOULD BE PLAYED BY ALL PLAYERS SOMETHING WILL ALWAYS BE MISSING. ERIC M

Way to go Delmon. Do not let these thug swastika toting backwater managers disrespect the game in this manner. Either treat every man the same, or get your tail end out of the game and this great country. It is amazing how many other players I have seen not hustle during Tampa Bay games, how in the heck can the manager pick this man and this moment? I am afraid we are allowing to many Tony Larussa racist wannabes infiltrate this game. This manager and the management that allows this behavoir are what is wrong with my great country.

its sad how an already negative situation can become even nastier due to ignorant racist bigotry. one man's actions are no excuse to put down an entire race and the offensive remarks on this posting are proof of that. not all african-americans are lazy, not all white-americans are racist, but stupidity is always prevalent among the ignorant. All this being said I think Delmon Young was clearly in the wrong (if he didnt run hard to first...didnt see the game) and the coach was right for sitting him. I dont condone his tirade either, but I atleast the guy said what he wanted to say. Not like most of you who skate around words that you know you want to say and replace them with "these people" and the likes. "These people", whom exactly might you be referring to? The Devil Rays, rookies, no I dont think so! You know who you were talking about and you do it here because you know it would get you anything from ridicule to a busted lip if any of "these people" heard you. But dont worry, with the advent of the internet all of the archie bunker types will have a forum for the closet bigotry. Just do me a favor and close the closet door behind you.

I was shocked by this young man's behavior. I am more shocked by the response here to that behavior. Some of the terrible comments posted here are infinitely more reprehensible than anything this young, immature baseball did. Do people actually still think and speak like this? Very sad and disappointing. We as a nation obviously still have much to do.
