The Chicago Tribune went out and did themselves a little journalism today (they do so everyday, actually), and came back with an interesting scoop: if a certain ownership company wins the Cubs, Steve Stone would be made general manager. And no, it's not Mark Cuban:
Stone and Cubs Hall of Fame outfielder Billy Williams are aligned with the Weisbach group, one of at least four known to be interested in buying the team. Weisbach, the founder of Ha-Lo Industries and a close friend of Stone's, is working with wealthy cable magnate Jim Anixter and others trying to raise money for the bid. Rich Melman, from the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group, is a possible partner.I do know this: Steve Stone is a very good professional baseball analyst, perhaps the best in the country. I do not know this: That being a good on-air analyst makes one a good general manager. But knowing Stone's reputation, there are much, much worse options. Worth a shot, right?
Stone, a former major league pitcher, longtime Cubs television analyst and current baseball analyst for WSCR-AM 670, would become the general manager if the Weisbach group were to land the team, the Tribune has learned.
Stone over the years has made no secret of his interest in running a ballclub and has made no broadcast commitments for next season.
UPDATE: On WSCR 670 in Chicago, Stone is denying any interest or involvement in any ownership group of position with the Cubs. So maybe the Trib didn't do journalism?

Ask any Detroit Lions fan if they think that a good on-air analyst makes for a good GM...

I think Steve Stone can & will make a great G. M. for many reasons; The most obvious one given the fact that he's had extensive and unequivocal insight on the one thing without question he's always had passion for & expertise on : THE CHICAGO CUBS.
Remember something Cubs fans- this isn't Hawk Harrelson were talking about here. While I love HH, who could forget the Carlton Fisk experiment back in '86? C'mon now, Steve Stone is far more objectionable and had the BALLS to finally have enough of watching failure on the field while knowing and understanding that baseball is ultimately a business and that right now, on the cusp of 100 seasons(we all know what the fu-- we're talking about here), he shall be the man to field the personnel to finally take care of that eternal piece of unfinished business while understanding and capable of handling the Chicago media and addressing their BELOVED FAN BASE.
Steve Stone is beyond the gimmicks and B.S.
If the Cubs were smart- with the greatest fan base, in the 3rd largest market, w/ a ballpark that always sells out even though it sells itself just by being empty, there should be no reason why the Cubs haven't sipped on World Championship Champagne yet: there are only excuses for that & they only sound good to the ones who keep making them.
All I keep wondering about along with MILLIONS of CUBS FANS IS WHEN?????!!!!
But as far as I know, in the face of anybody who gives or doesn't give a DAMN, & I can give you all the answer to WHO: STEVE STONE!
