Rudy Guiliani, Red Sox Fan

If my handy electoral vote counter is correct, Massachusetts is worth 12 electoral votes in 2008 while Colorado is worth merely nine. So the following is either a shrewd political move designed to bring New England in play in the general election, or Rudy Guiliani really likes the American League:

Sounds like a baseball flip-flop. Rudy Giuliani, a lifelong New York Yankees fan, said Tuesday he's pulling for their most hated rivals, the Boston Red Sox, to win the World Series over the Colorado Rockies.

"I'm rooting for the Red Sox," the Republican presidential contender said in response to a question, sparking applause at the Boston restaurant where he was picking up a local endorsement.

"I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets," he said. "Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York."

"In Colorado, in the next week or two, you will see, I will have the courage to tell the people of Colorado the same thing, that I am rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series," he said.

This is obviously a shot across the bow to the eerily robotic Massachusetts man Mitt Romney. Guiliani, Red Sox fan? Mitt better start hedging his bets soon. Might I suggest a Rockies cap at the next stump speech? The Romney campaign likes everyone!

And just so you know, John Kerry wants to make it clear he voted for the Red Sox before he voted against the Rockies, after he voted against removing the "Devil" from Devil Rays ... or something like that.

As a Red Sox fan I don't want him to root for the Sox and he shouldn't, as no real Red sox or Yankee fan would EVER root for the other team.

I agree with Tobrien28....Rudy is a joke! He can't be loyal to fellow New Yorker's, his first two wives, his kids, his Republican party, to NY cops and fire-fighters....He's all about show and about himself...I would be gob-smacked should he be nominated or elected...God help us all!!!!!

Like most politicians, Giuliani is an opportunist. One can only hope that Massachusetts primary voters aren't dumb enough to fall for his ploy in order to gain some votes in a state he believes is in play--this from a guy who never missed a photo op to appear in premium box seats at Yankee Stadium, now pretending to support a Red Sox team that no true Yankee fan (myself included) would EVER root for. And bear in mind that just before 9/11 (which Giuliani never fails to exploit for his political benefit), he was extremely unpopular toward the end of his second and final term as mayor of New York. If not for 9/11, no one would even be talking about him as a serious presidential candidate.

Like Rudy, I am also a Yankee fan rooting for the Sox. I went to grad school in Boston, and love the city. Denver is a lovely city as well, but I agree with Rudy about the American League thing.

I am more attentive toward who will be managing the Yankees. Rudy's former chief counsel Randy Levine presented a bogus offer to Joe Torre. Rudy, who used to lure free agent players to NY, used little influence with one friend to help another. Now the players and ownership appear to be on the outs with Rudy. Maybe this is why he is rooting for the Red Sox?

You folks obviously know nothing about baseball fan etiquette. You always root for the team that represents the league that your team is in. Rudy points out the Mets as the exception due to NY. Trust me I'm sure that during the season he wouldn't wee wee on a Red Sox hat if it were on fire.

I hate to say it, but I agree with a few Red Sox fans on the board. As a Yankees fan, there's not an event where you'll hear me cheering for Boston. It's either go Yankees, or go other team that Boston's playing.

I know it's the exact same way for die hard Red Sox fans, and I'd call them out if they tried to flip sides, just as I'd expect they'd do the same to me.
