Years after his baseball career ended, former Major League closer Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams is still showing that intensity that helped him rack up 192 saves in his 11-year career. Unfortunately, he's choosing to do so at his daughter's 5th grade basketball game. From Dan Gross at the Philadelphia Daily News, we get this.
The former Phillies hurler cursed at a female referee who was calling a basketball game in which his daughter, a fifth-grader, was playing for St. Mary of the Lakes against Our Lady of Good Counsel. That's no way to act in front of our lady of good counsel! Maybe Mitch should have undertaken some of that good counsel before lashing out at the female referee.
Williams, who now sells his own brand of salsa and who later this month starts hosting a Phillies pre-game show on The Big Talker 1210 AM, told us yesterday that he was sorry for using the f-word while yelling at the ref. "I'm emotional when it comes to my kids. What I saw happening was completely unfair," Williams said, referring to his daughter's team being fouled repeatedly with a lack of calls from the refs.
You see, Mitch, I hate to break it to you, but there are generally going to be a lot of fouls that go uncalled in a grade school girls basketball game. I know it's hard to believe that 10-year old girls haven't mastered the art of defense without hacking once in a while, but it's just one of those rules of life that we have to deal with.
It's not easy, I know, but if we all stick together, I think we'll get through it.Sorry, No Photos

Wild Thing is one of the greatest releavers of all times. Looks like he will develope the skills to coach girls basketball. In the mean time he is giving his time to be with his daughter. You have to remember he is all about winning, that sometimes includes getting on the Ref.

Joe Carter and The Wild Thing still make me cringe. I will never forget Carter leaping with joy. Maybe Mitch was thinking about that when he was at the basketball game

put tape on mouth before setting in bleachers. You won't look out of place....tons of other parents have to do the same. The difference is most of us are more mature than to yell F-words in front of 5th graders.

Mitch gets wild we all know. But he's always man enough to admit to his errors, including "the pitch" (which by the way was low and inside). He was a great pitcher and a great entertainer. He got a little wild at a game in favor of his daughter and he apologized. Al good Mitch. Shake it off and try to chill at the next one. Philly forgives its toughguys.

My daughter also played for a Christian grade school, she was the smallest player on any team, but she was also the fastest. One tournament, a very large girl was put to guard or try to slow her down. She was leaning all over her and punching her in the back and ribs. Finally my daughter had enough and watched for the referees to turn away then she turned and decked her, she had to be carried off. The croud just roared with laughter and applauded. My daughter just shrugged when the ref asked what happened. She got most valuable player of the tournament.

Why are they making such a big deal out of this? there is alot of worst things going on in the schools that they need to worry about. They are just looking for him to feel bad and give a big donation. Mitch dont you dare give a donation. That is the way you felt at the time. by the way love your salsa!!! YOUR LATINA FAN ALWAYS!!!

After Mitch threw the pitch that walked in the run that won the game and the world series for the OTHER team it was rumored that Mitch Williams tried to commit suicide by shooting himself, but he was OK the shot was High and Outside.....(ya gotta be a old Phillies fan to appreciate that joke)

Any good coach at that age group would teach the players to hack like crazy until the ref starts to call the fouls. You have to find out what you can get away with. Sounds like the coach of Our Lady of Good Counsel (how ironic) was schooling the coach of St. Mary of the Lakes.
