Report: Mets Could Fire Randolph Within Days

SI's Jon Heyman is reporting today that Willie Randolph could be gone from the Mets head coaching position as soon as this weekend. Although Omar Minaya does love Randolph, it is entirely possible that the Mets, desperate to make any sort of play (have you considered Doc Rivers as a motivational speaker?) will fire anyone at this point.

Willie Randolph's status as Mets manager is extremely tenuous now. General manager Omar Minaya is seriously considering changing managers and at least a couple of the team's coaches, sources told SI.com.

A Mets official indicated that nothing was expected to be decided today regarding Randolph's status. But that doesn't preclude something from happening later this weekend. Front-office sources indicate his hold on the job is shaky, at best.

Should Randolph be fired, bench coach Jerry Manuel will take over, sources told SI.com.

[...] Minaya is also weighing other changes, which could include removing hitting coach Howard Johnson and pitching coach Rick Peterson, sources indicate. Some organization people believe sweeping changes must be tried in order to jump-start the disappointing team.

I think Randolph will be gone by the All Star Break unless the Mets go on a tear. It's stupid for two reasons. First, because there is still a half season of baseball left and while the Phillies are hot, well, you saw what happened last year. And second is, this team is not that good.

The reality is, though, that the zoomed in microscope of New York adds enough pressure that if push comes to shove -- and it just about has -- Minaya will save his own hide via a standard knee jerk sweep job of the coaching staff.

It is not the managers fault the team is doing bad. It is the General Manager, He should be the one fired since he put the team together.

Hank, maybe you should go back to grade school and learn how to spell. Secondly, Howard Johnson was a power hitter who also had 3 30-30 seasons....He might be the best bet for these guys if he could come in and show them that they need to get down and dirty and start playing ball and stoping being prissy's.

Mike, the manager is the one who fills out the lineup card every day and does not make changes at pertinent times, such as taking out a pitcher at the right time, calling for hit and runs, stealing, calling pitches to the catchers and positioning the players on the field per the pitches. Are you telling me that if you ran a store and did not run it correctly the guy who is not on the field trying to fix it is the one that should be fired. NO, IT IS THE MANAGER!!!

In a way, I agree with NFL Cheats-Willie was never a met and should go back with the yankees. It will be great when he no longer has to dirty himself with the uniform of the queens from Queens

You say that as if Minaya would somehow be wrong in firing Randolph. What's fair has little to do with decisions like this as standards vary between organizations. Both Randolph and Minaya knew the day they were hired that their eventual exits from the NY Mets would much more than likely be via unceremonious firings as opposed to on their own terms, that's simply reality.

you seem to be taking a shot at the phillies... are you kidding me??? they have chemistry and players that play hard every day... of course it's the players that can make a manager look good or bad, but it is also the mix... that's why minaya should take some blame for the mess with the mets... it's not only willie...
