How Will Jerry Manuel Keep The Mets in Line? Threatening to Draw Blood!

You might have noticed that the first play in Jerry Manuel's Mets managerial career on Tuesday night featured a Jose Reyes single, where his hamstring became tight. Manuel, not wanting to risk losing one of his big weapons during his first inning on the job, took Reyes out of the game ... to the very public dismay of Reyes. I for one was scared that this would turn out to be the next great Mets controversy. But Manuel made sure that wouldn't happen.

After Reyes stalked off, flung his helmet along the front of the Mets' dugout and stormed into the clubhouse, Manuel followed him in during the half-inning to demand -– and get -- an apology.

"I did the wrong thing and apologized," Reyes said after the eventual 6-1 loss to the Angels. "I know that Jerry is just looking out for me."

Manuel didn't appreciate the tantrum, calling it "unacceptable."

"I told him the next time he does that, I'm going to get my blade out and cut him right on the field," Manuel joked yesterday. "I'm a gangster."

Well, the Mets needed a shake-up. I'd say having a manager who may or may not be packing is a great way to do it. We might see the first player to end up on the disabled list due to "disciplinary action".

P.S. The Mets won 5-4 in 10 on Wednesday, with Reyes scoring three runs including the tying run in the ninth. Mission accomplished.
