The Monthly 'Ryan Church Still Battling Concussion Symptoms' Post

Ryan ChurchRyan Church spent most of June on the disabled list recovering from post-concussion symptoms before returning to action on June 29th. Unfortunately, he lasted just seven games: he left Saturday's game in Philadelphia in the eighth inning complaining of dizziness.

Despite hearing encouraging news after the game -- he called his doctor in New York, who told him he's likely suffering from a migraine, an ailment he's dealt with for years -- his symptoms apparently grew worse overnight, and by Sunday the team decided to take the decision out of his hands and send him back to New York for more tests.

In the short-term, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Chuch go back to the DL. But looking at the long-term, would anyone blame the Mets if they put him on the shelf for the rest of the year? He's battled recurring symptoms for months after suffering a pair of concussions earlier this year, and despite several attempts at extended rest, he just can't seem to get over the hump.

It'd be a difficult decision for the Mets to make (especially considering Church has been one of their best hitters when available, cobwebs and rust be damned), but there's comes a time when a player's long-term health is more important than whether a team can get back into the wild card chase.
