When teams fall out of contention, or when coaches become unwelcome, the "Fire So-and-So Dot Com" move is always popular. The other thing you can do is rent your fandom out on EBay. Which is what some random Cleveland fan is doing (current bid: $299). What is included in the basic service - provided to winning bidder:All good stuff. Although I find it annoying that whenever people do this, they throw the expenses on someone who's already paying a bunch of money. I also swear a Tennessee Volunteer fan did this at one point, but I can't for the life of me find it on the Googles.
1. I will watch at least one game a week of your favorite team and root as hard as I can for them to win.
2. I will send you at least 3 emails a week telling you how awesome your team is and or discussing what your team needs to do to get better (in my opinion).
3. I will wear (at your expense) any appropriate apparel (meaning Male officially sanctioned MLB merchandise) for your team. You will recieve one digital photo of me wearing this garb for each item you purchase and send to me.
54. I will root for your team for the remaining 2008 season and for the 2008 Post Season, after that, I am no longer requried to root for your team.
5. I will email a friend of yours and tell them why their team sucks, and why your team is awesome. (limit 3 emails - no profanity)
Additionally, this gentleman is charging an additional $3,500 (Red Sox), $1,500 (Jim Thome related), $10,000 (Yankees), $5,000 (Roger Clemens related), $35,000 (Barry Bonds related). And, if you happen to be an MLB player -- right -- it will cost you either an extra $10,000 (AVG over .300 or ERA under 3.00) or an additional $15,000 (AVG under .300 or ERA over 3.00).
Hey, I dislike Clemens and Bonds as much as anyone. As for Thome, get over it. Also to get over: charging additionally for teams you don't like. Isn't that the whole point? Also, what if the team of the winning fan somehow trades for Thome after the auction, or signs Bonds at a later date? Is there some sort of grandfather clause in place? Either way, I guess this guy's not scared to bounce.
If you're going to sell out and root for someone else, then the least you can do is take on all comers. The fact that the Indians underperformed this year and then made a rational decision to get back a blue-chipper for a guy that was leaving anyway is beside the point. You're bailing on your team, the least you can do is pull for anyone.

Hey thanks for the write up. I am the owner of the auction, so I wanted to comment on a couple of things. #1 in any business venture wouldn't you pass the expenses onto the client? I don't see why I should pay $50.00 for a jersey or $25.00 for a hat when I am providing a service. They don't have to pay for those things if they don't want to. It's an optional service :)
As for charging more for other teams. I suppose I can see your point. However in the job market, wouldn't you ask more for a position in a less desirable location?
Truthfully, I should get paid more for those teams because it's harder to root for them if they make me sick.
Thanks again for the write up!

Don't get me wrong -- it would cost at least 10k for me to root for the Yankees.
But, if we're strictly talking about a business model, by eliminating the Yankees and Red Sox (essentially, with the high price), you're only hurting yourself by lowering the number of people that will be willing to bid on your auction.
And as far as gear, if I'm paying for this, I want my new "fan" to be rocking out my team's gear.
Like I said though, cool idea -- I just have some issues with the execution.

I was kind of hoping Steinbrenner would be so outraged that he would pay it... I mean... he dug up a jersey from his new stadium didn't he?

So, does the winning team get a cut of the winnings? Just saying...the Nationals could use the money.
Just kidding. There are no Nationals fans.

This guy sure isn't selling his fandom very well -- or maybe he just doesn't have any genuinely useful services to offer. If I were going to sell MY fandom, I'd sell it based on my track record (of teams I like having winning seasons, playoff appearances, etc.), not my willingness to yap about baseball (which I probably couldn't bring myself to avoid doing for free anyway).

I would tell the team I root for to jump into a lake.
