Manny Moments
For 15 years Manny Ramirez has been making coaches, fans, and teammates shake their heads in amazement with both his offensive power and jaw-dropping mental lapses. Click through to see some of the more memorable "Manny Moments" from the carefree outfielder's career.

Ramirez has had several encounters with the "Green Monster" scoreboard in left field of Fenway Park. Ramirez, seen here peeking out through the door in the "Green Monster," has disappeared into the scoreboard on several occasions during pitching changes, reportedly to make phone calls or relieve himself, despite the fact that there is no bathroom behind the scoreboard.

The game on June 5 between Boston and the Rays will probably be better remembered for the bench-clearing brawl, but it also had a "Manny being Manny moment". After the fight, Ramirez and first baseman Kevin Youkilis had to be separated by teammates after the left fielder reportedly told Youkilis to "cut that [expletive] out."

Ramirez turned a routine fly out into a memorable play when he reached into the stands to slap hands with a fan during a game in Baltimore. Ramirez then threw to Dustin Pedroia, whose relay to first doubled off Aubrey Huff. Manny joked about the play after the game. "It was fun. I love it. I think, you know, that's how you get your All-Star vote. I'm pretty sure that guy's gonna vote for me," said Ramirez. "It's one at a time, you know. Get your votes one at a time."

Ramirez has also been featured in a few strange auction advertisements on eBay. In May 2007, he appeared in a listing that tried to sell an expensive BBQ grill. He later posted a custom Chrysler 300M up for auction.

During the 2005 season, the Red Sox faced heavy speculation that Manny would force a trade. But Ramirez erased those doubts when he chopped an RBI single as a pinch hitter versus the Twins, and received a standing ovation 54 minutes after the four o'clock trading deadline had passed. After the game, Ramrez said "It's great, man. They love me here, man. This is the place to be. 'Manny being Manny,' he's great, man."

In 2002, while rehabbing with the Pawtucket Red Sox, Manny lost his diamond earring sliding into third base. After the game, 13 PawSox players and the Syracuse grounds crew combed the third base area and found the stud, but not the diamond that was reportedly worth a $15,000.

Accusing the team of not being straightforward with him and deceiving him? That's just, hey! That's not cool at all!
At least, not if you're Red Sox owner John Henry. During the All-Star break Manny made the following comment when asked about his future in Boston.
"I want no more [expletive] where they tell you one thing and behind your back they do another thing," Ramirez told the Boston Herald. "I think I've earned that respect, for a team to sit down with me and tell me this is what we want, this is what we want to do."When John Henry caught wind of what Manny had said, needless to say, he wasn't exactly doing back flips.
"I find remarks that we have been anything other than completely straightforward to be personally offensive," Henry said in an e-mail, according to the Herald. "Manny has been a crucial part of two world championships. I do not believe we would have won either without him. He has never played a more important role than he has thus far this year."I'm not sure what Manny's gripe with management is at the moment, but I'm pretty sure if we just sit around and wait another five minutes or so, Manny won't know what his gripe with management was either. Of course, none of this means that Manny won't be patrolling left field at Fenway next season, as Ramirez made it clear he wants to stay in Boston. He just wants to know from the team what they're plans are now.
Do they want a multi-year deal? To take things one year at a time? Or do they just want to part ways? These are the things Manny is trying to find out, and I can't blame him for it, but he probably shouldn't imply that the team has been dishonest with him about things in the past. It doesn't make for pleasant negotiations.

Manney may be different and there are times I don't like what he does but he is no idiot.. He is a great player, he just doesn't stop to think what he is doing at times. As long as he plays as well as he does, no one should every call him an idiot.. You just hear things and see somethings, but there is a good side to all of us...

To Joanne - you're an idiot. You must be a Yankee fan - saying there's "no sportsmanship in Boston". There's plenty of classless players / organizations / sports fans in New York and other cities all over the U.S. of A.
As for Manny's comments, this usually happens about once a year.
His contract is up at the end of the season. His numbers continue to decline. He's paid $20 million a year. Boston will NOT pay him anything close to this to stay, as they know his numbers will continue to fall off with age.
They should let him go. That $20 million will help get a young, productive big-name free agent...with some $ to spare.
This will allow the Red Sox to continue to be a championship-caliber team for the next several years.
You've been a HUGE help, Manny...but your time is up in Boston.
Thanks for the TWO World Series championships. It's been great knowing you.
Best of luck with your next team...if anyone else still wants you!

Many needs to appreciate the fans that are there for baseball and CUT that mop head hair of his so he can be a true roll model for the up and coming ball players. Its a shame that theres no so-called dress code anymore for them and they can pretty much do what they want. If the owners r paying them that much money , then they should make em look proffesional, thats why its called Professional Sports.

About 7 years ago, Manny sat out with a hamstring pull for about 8 weeks and the Indians let it be known that he had not been showing up for therapy sessions to fix this 4 week injury. The Tribe was arguably the best team in baseball at the end of that year and came up one game short of the playoffs, in large part because of Manny's extra 4 week vacation. Then he said he wanted to stay with the Indians during free agency negotiations that netted him an extra $25 Mil or so from the BoSox. After it was over, he said he really was angry at the Indians for criticizing his not trying harder to recover--and made it clear that he was just playing them as a bargaining chip.
"Manny being Manny" is not so innocent--and somebody should realize that he is at best a DH for the next 3-4 years who is getting less valuable to his team by the week. It was cute when he was more or less under control, but his cost has outgrown his batting average, too bad he can't seem to grow up himself.

Manny Ramirez is NOT and never has been on steroids, and JOANNE you are a completely moronic unknowingly fool about baseball. Manny had an off year in 2007, (still 20 homers in an injury plagued season, his lowest in 13 years!) Luckily for the Red Sox who picked up the option. (18 jacks at the break) He wasn't even an unrestricted free agent, stupid Joanne. I want you to LOOK at any site that has career baseball stats and look through other players, past or present and tell my who has his type of credentials without steroids? Greatest pure hitter of our generation= Manny Ramirez.Educate yourself before you speak. Who has 500 HRs and a batting title? Few!

Got the answer? 500 HRs and a batting crown? Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, Ted Williams, Frank Thomas, Barry bonds, Manny Ramirez, Frank Robinson. Gary Sheffield may make it if he can get back on the field and hit with power again. I think that sums things up, right? Can't think of any more.
20 million and worth every penny.

Yeah, like those classless Yankees fans that were booing Palpelbon because the New York classless press printed lies about him saying things he didn't even say. Like the classless Yankees fans that were threatening Palpelbon's wife during the All Star parade. What a bunch of classless poor sports.

To Joanne, you got to be kidding me. Of course there is plenty of sportsmanship in Boston, and Manny wont be going anywhere for a long time because he is a key asset to the Boston Red Sox. S please don't make rash and completely wrong statements because though Manny makes some inappropriate actions he is still one man who has a very feared bat in the MLB.

skillbybill: Oh that was real original. Compare the Yankee shoot ups in the butt, to the Red Sox players on the list. Now, what's that you said?
At least do some research dude. Manny uses a high-tech mouthguard made and designed especially for Manny by PURE Power Mouthguard. I think the keyword there is "PURE". Do any of the Yankee's know what that word [Pure] means?
Now, I gave you the company name, the Dr. that makes it is Dr. Gary Lederman...start researching. After that, comment originally...if at all possible.

homesweethomerun, do you know why there are no Red Sox on the list? its because the investigation was flawed and incomplete. The two people they talked to had connections to only the Yankees and Mets. I bet if they went around and did a complete investigation, which means investigating every single team, that a few Red Sox players will pop up.
And kerri ishler, yes, Giambi is an idiot for taking steroids, but at least he was man enoguh to admit it, unlike a certain ball player who is currently not playing. And as good of a player as Manny is, hes still an idiot.
And now to you Darryl, the New York press did not print lies about what Papelbon said, every word they printed came right out of his mouth, he even admitted that he said it because he is competitive, check your facts before you open your mouth. And Boston fans are just as classless as Yankee fans.
