With the trade deadline right around the corner, our MLB editor brings you the top five rumors every day until July 31.- The Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates are indeed working on a three-way deal that would send Manny Ramirez to South Florida, Jeremy Hermida and prospects to Pittsburgh and Jason Bay (and possibly reliever John Grabow) to Boston. The trade is still a long way from being completed, however, with the teams expected to haggle right up to the deadline on the prospects heading to the Pirates. The deal is fragile because it involves three teams and prospects from both Florida and Boston, so it could go right down to the wire, and there's always a chance the deal collapses.
But there is also a different feeling in Boston this time around with Ramirez, much like the feeling in 2004 when GM Theo Epstein swallowed hard and got rid of the beloved Nomar Garciaparra. If the three-way deal with the Pirates collapses, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Red Sox would then deal directly with the Marlins. And remember this: while the Red Sox would love to have Manny Ramirez in their lineup in October, it won't be as difficult as you'd think to replace his production over the final two months of the season because he is so poor defensively.
- GM Kenny Williams has already added future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox's roster, but he might not be done. With Scott Linebrink on the DL and closer Bobby Jenks just off of it, Chicago is looking for bullpen depth. Williams and the White Sox have been connected with Oakland closer Huston Street for a few weeks now, and there are indications from the Windy City that he'll make a final push to acquire him before the 4PM ET deadline. Eamonn Brennan has already covered the Nick Swisher-Street swap speculation already at FanHouse and correctly assumes that a deal is unlikely.
- It doesn't look like the Rays will sit idly by if they lose out to Boston or someone else in the Jason Bay sweepstakes. Though GM Walt Jocketty claims no one has called about Adam Dunn recently, there are numerous reports that Tampa Bay is pursuing Dunn as a fallback option for Bay. The Rays would prefer a right-handed bat, but Dunn, a left-hander, has such prodigious power they might be willing to ignore his handedness. Dunn would presumably be a designated hitter if he was dealt to Tampa Bay.
- The Twins are generally quiet this time of year, but that may not be the case this season. Minnesota is reportedly interested in dealing Boof Bonser as part of a deal for a third baseman or a reliever and also as a way to open up a rotation spot for Francisco Liriano, who has been dominant in Triple-A lately. The Twins could really use some offensive help for the final two months of the season, and Seattle's Adrian Beltre could make a lot of sense for them.
- Surprisingly, it appears the Mets might sit the next few hours out. New York would like to add a corner outfielder and possibly a reliever, but GM Omar Minaya has balked at the asking price for Seattle's Raul Ibanez and J.J. Putz as well as Colorado's Brian Fuentes and Baltimore's George Sherrill.

The Red Sox can keep Manny Ramirez since he is not really a team player, he would probably upset the Marlins more than he would help them. The Marlins need a catcher who can also hit, like Paul LO Duca of the Nat's. I hope they don't acquire Ramirez just to boost attendance.

Would like to see the Yankees acquire another starter. I understand the need to upgrade the catcher position, even though Jose Molina has been fantastic defensively. This should provide a nice combo at this position.
I am concerned that the bullpen has now become weaker. Texerdia would have been a great pick up at first base. Hopefully after this year when he becomes a free agent.

I am a Red Sox fan that would not mind seeing Ramirez in another uniform. I am thankful for the contributions he has made to the championship seasons, but he is really all about himself and not about the team. I honestly can not understand how someone who is making upwards of $20 million a season can have the attitude he does. It is a crap shoot as to whether or not he will hustle on defense or even run out ground balls on offense. For the amount of money these guys make you would expect them to go all out all the time, but with Manny you never know what you are goinng to get. A blue collar laborer like myself does not really understand that kind of attitude.

I'm so sick anfd tired of Yankee fans constantly wanting to buy more and more players, while at the same time they state that they don't buy the pennant. If that is the case, why dont they try to spend same amount of other teams? Spolied rottern fans that only care about buying pennats!

Dodger GM Coletti had to do something after the Andruw Jones disaster of an acquisition....why not Manny....maybe this move will allow him to keep his job.
