It hasn't exactly been a secret that current Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has long been interested in owning the Chicago Cubs. Whether he's sitting in the bleachers downing beers with the fans, or next to the Cubs dugout with the Tribune Company brass, Mark has made his intentions pretty clear.The only question is whether or not Bud Selig and his buddies would ever allow Cuban to enter their exclusive fraternity of stuffy old white guys. It doesn't seem likely, so if Mark is going to have a real shot, he's going to have to blow away every other bidder for the team. Word on the street is that Cuban has already put in the biggest offer for the team, as he pulled $1.3 billion out of his pocket and put it on the table.
Cuban is reported to be the top bidder, at nearly $1.3 billion, but the auction will begin soon, after the applicants and their bankers delve further into the assets books.
"The Cubs are an amazing franchise and brand," Cuban wrote in an e-mail message. "I think the owner of any major sports franchise has two jobs: first, it's to work hard to win a championship year after year, and second, to be the caretaker of the franchise in the community."

Well, if the starting offer for the team is $1.3 billion, who knows how high it will go before the team is sold. Though it's important to note that the highest bidder doesn't always win. We learned this most recently when John Henry was awarded the Boston Red Sox even though he didn't put up the most money.
Which is exactly why I don't see any way that Bud Selig and MLB will sell the Cubs to Cuban. Sure, he'd do everything in his power to turn the team into a perennial powerhouse, and increase revenues for everybody around the league, but his personality just doesn't mesh with what Selig wants in an owner (and by personality I mean he's not one of Bud's good friends).
Selig takes enough heat as it is from the media and fans alike, and the last thing he's going to want is one of the owners calling him out on a regular basis like Cuban does to NBA commissioner David Stern.

The Cubs deserve an owner who wants to win. I'm a loyal Yankee fan. I'm glad that the Steinbrenners own the Yankees as they want to win. GO YANKEES! Miami, Florida, loves the Yankees as there are a million former New Yorkers living in Miami. Heck, there are more Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs fans than Marlins fans in South Florida.
If that lefty, egomaniac buys the Cubs, I will throw 50 years of allegiance away and never watch another game as long as I live. When you use your money to make an anti-military movie (which totally flopped) you can kiss this fan good bye! Screw Cuban, screw the Mavericks and now if he wins screw the Cubs. Baseball is a great game, but my country and our military are way more important than a kids game played by so-called adults. Cuban is the perfect owner for the Cubs. He, like most Cubs fans, is a spoiled, whining, egomaniacal, classless, loud-mouthed, lout. He'll fit right in with that bunch of drunks.
Cuban should not be the owner of the Cubs. He should be the owner of his hometown team the Pirates. There are very few teams who need an owner with the deep pockets of Cuban more than the Buccos. I believe he made an offer for them a few years back but then majority owner Kevin McClatchy turned him down - for no apparent good reason other than his pride. With the nicest ballpark in the majors Cuban could have provided a winning franchise to a city who so desperately deserves one.

I'm sure most reasonable Cubs fans would love to have Cuban as an owner. He certainly couldn't do a worse job than what they've had for decades. The guy has proven that he'll do what it takes to win and that he has a healthy enthusiasm and spirit supporting his teams. I think he'd work really well in Chicago. I wish a guy like him would own some of my teams.

Mark Cuban is an American traitor and a self-indulgent idiot. He bankrolled the anti-military film, "Redacted," (a film Michael Medved said "might be the worst movie I've ever seen") and wants to further the release of a movie that tries to show 9-11 as an inside job. Yeah, that's the guy I want owning one of the 5 most famous and important sports franchises in America. Wake up, Bud Selig. Let him while away his miserable life whining about the officials in Dallas as another of his Maverick teams underachieves.

If Mark Cuban buys the Chicago Cubs he will add some spice to the game of baseball by criticizing the umpires for blown calls and making wise guys comments that will have baseball executives on the edge of their seats.
I am tired of all the criticism about Cub fans. How many teams do you think would have a loyal following after all these years without a pennant. To call them drunken louts, is to ignore the fact that such types attend all sporting events. If they are selling beer, drunk happens. Michael stated Cub fans are "spoiled"!!! How on earth can a Cub fan be spoiled? If you have any comments, why not directly address the subject.
I only hope the next owner will leave keep the Cubs in Wrigley Field, and get Len and Bob out of the broadcasting booth.

Anyone owning the Cubs is better the peice of human waste Sam Zell, he basically got the team for free leveraging his stock to buy the Tribune Co.
