On Deck: Just Win, Baby!

On Deck is FanHouse's look at the day's most intriguing baseball matchups.

Boston Red Sox (74-55) at Baltimore Orioles (67-62) 1:07 PM ET

Daisuke Matsuzaka is the very case study of new breed vs. old guard. The old guard will see Matsuzaka's 15-2 record and his 2.77 ERA and tell you that he's gotta be one of the best pitchers in baseball. The new breed of fan will tell you that his 1.37 WHIP and his 77 walks in 126+ innings tell the future of a man who's been lucky to get out of jams that he created for himself against mediocre teams. Which side are you on?

Today, Dice K goes up against the Blue Jays ... and while everybody is talking about the job that Jerry Manuel is doing for the Mets after taking over mid-season, there's been a similar, quieter turnaround in Toronto, where Cito Gaston is 32-23 this season after taking over for John Gibbons, who started the season 35-39.

Tampa Bay Rays (79-49) at Chicago White Sox (73-55) - 2:05 PM ET

One of the quirks that I have doing these On Decks on the weekends is that I try to pick three different games on Sunday than I would on Saturday. But if there's an irresistible force that demands your attention on a Saturday, and then they go and win, why wouldn't that very same force not be worth your attention on Sunday? The Rays are an irresistible force and an immovable object all in one. Are four runs in the eighth inning against the White Sox on Saturday not enough proof?

So I suggest, once again, that you watch them.

Minnesota Twins (74-55) at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (78-50) - 3:35 PM ET

Assuming that the wild card comes out of the AL East, and also assuming that the Twins win the Central, this could possibly be your ALCS matchup (with more assumptions, of course). And if this current series is at all a preview, the Twins aren't exactly going to get run over by Los Angeles of Anaheim. The Twins got two wins in games where the Angels threw out two of their best bullets (John Lackey and Joe Saunders), and the Twins also chased Jon Garland before finally bowing to the Angels last night. Today, they get Ervin Santana, and counter with Kevin Slowey, who's capable of throwing a complete game at any time.
