Manny Ramirez does many, many weird things. Many weird things. Oddly enough, however, shameless self promotion usually isn't one of them.So it's not even that shocking to hear him tell reporters that he wants nothing to do with the Most Valuable Player award. Seriously, please don't give it to him.
"It's nice that some people think I deserve it," Ramirez said. "I'd like to win it. But I have to be realistic. Someone who was only here for two months doesn't deserve it. It should go to someone who played the six months of the season."
Ramirez said he has resigned himself to the reality that he might never win an MVP award.
"I've played 16 years, I've been a pretty good player and I've never won it," he said. "It's not a big deal. I'll go on with my life."
Now, for the most part, Manny is right. He doesn't deserve to win it. But not because he's only played a half season in the NL.
And I could make the same argument that I made for CC Sabathia re: half season, playoff fortunes, difference maker, etc., except well ... for this from Gammons.
It's hard to talk about the MVP Award for Manny when the team that paid the Dodgers to take Ramirez is 27-13 without him through Sunday and have seen their runs per game increase from 4.94 at the time of the deal to 6.22 since.
Yes, yes it is. As good as the Dodgers have been ... well, the Red Sox have been better. And Manny's seen that, so he knows that while he makes a tremendous difference in the NL West, it's not like the Dodgers have been white hot the entire time. Or, you know, are a guarantee to finish above .500

manny ramirez to me is a true warroir i didntknow that for sure before he came to the dodgers, but now that i get to see him almost every game im convinced that he is one of the best ball players to ever play the game, and im not saying that only because he is a dodger, whenhe first was with the indians i kind of knew that he is a good ballplayer, and one most distinctive reason is when there is a qusetionable strike call ,he just takes it and that for one tells you bundles about a player, he is very reserved so far as that is concerned, so to me maybe he can get 1/2 the mvp award, him and someone elseand maybe there is room for arguement for him to get the award, but all in all he is a respectable player and i appreciate that as a fan,the only thing else to say is VIVA MANNY,OLE OLE OLE
Manny is right...it shouldn't go to someone that only played 2 months but should go to someone that played all 6 and he surely didn't play hard in Boston this year. Watch his last game against the Yankees when he just stood in the batters box and did NOTHING but take pitches leaving the bat on his shoulder the entire time. I loved Manny as a Red Sox until he decided to not try this year and for someone that's been a pretty classy player, he wasn't this year. If he played his ass off in Boston, like he is now in LA, the Sox would've never traded him but he decided to act like a baby and not even try because he couldn't get his way.
A true warrior? Ha! you can have him. wait til next year when he starts all his petty bullsh*t again. He'll show up late for camp, complain about money, then about the fans. He'll start trotting down to first, out by 15' when he should have been safe. He'll turn and jog after balls he should have caught. Let him be a cancer in YOUR clubhouse.
That's just "manny being manny!"
Manny would look good in the Phillies lineup next year. Can you imgine Rollins batting first Utley 2nd MANNY 3rd Howard 4th and Werth 5th Victorino 6th. They would have more runs and more HR's then anyone in History. Playing In Citizens park Manny and Howard would both hit 50 and have a chance to hit over 60 Hrs.
Eddie, you really ar kRAzY...the best ballplayer to ever play the game? You must be a kid or have no concept of the history of baseball. Sure, the guy is a great hitter but he's marginal in all other parts of his "game." Not arguing strike calls is not the sign of a great ballplayer.
He wouldn't even smell the top 100 all time and forget about the Hall. You've seen him regularly for a few months. Wait until the honeymoon in LA is over. Tigers don't change their stripes.
Manny, laid down on his team and teammates in Boston, in the middle of a playoff race. Because 20,000,000 a year was not enough. He just stopped playing.... If thats the kind of player you want on your team you can have him!!!
Before coming to L.A., all I heard was that "Manny being Manny" meant selfishness, distractions, and controversy. Since Manny has been in L.A., all he has done is turn around a stagnant Dodger's team, lead them into first place, play every single game so far, re-energized a lifeless clubhouse with his boyish enthusiasm, and put up astounding offensive numbers that are comparable to none. And on top of all of this, he decides to defer to other N.L players he feels is more deserving of the N.L MVP than he is. In light of all of this and more, how this writer can level a negative attack on Manny is beyond me. Manny IS being Manny and for once it is a thing of beauty to watch.
You're absolutely right that he's been playing his ass off in LA but wait until he has a gripe or gets disgruntled again. You'll be saying, Manny being Manny just like we did here in Boston and it was fine until he decided that he wasn't even going to try anymore. Then it was more than Manny being Manny, it was Manny being a big baby. He's on a friggin' tear now that he's in LA and happy but it's only a matter of time until Manny starts being Manny again...even in LA.
Thank you Pete, as a Dodger fan, we will take him. GO BLUE!!
Man-Ram has always been one of those "love me - hate me" kinda guys but regardless, he produces & it's actually refreshing to hear someone apply some logic to needing to be a full season player to warrant getting the MVP award. His numbers @ Boston weren't bad but his Dodger stats would make him a shoo-in if those were generated over an entire season w/LA. He's colorful at the very least & since I don't have firsthand knowledge of his alleged clubhouse "issues" ( don't think Schilling is impartial ) I admire his candor in this day of the "me first" player.
He's certainly ISN'T, as Eddie claims, the best ( or even one of the best ) to ever play the game because he's one dimensional. His defense is abysmal & how many times does he NOT run out a routine play ( even if he's healthy )? I'll give him props for his batting ability but there's much more to the game unless you just need a good DH.
Pete, you couldn't have said it any better. He did abandon the Red Sox in the middle of a run. I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but his teamates (with the small exception of Youk) always treated him with respect and the fans in Boston showed him nothing but love. We miss Manny, but given his past shananigans he should not be considered MVP material.

Manny does not deserve to be MVP. He is not a good team mate, he let down his fans in Red Sox Nation that put up with his fake "Hammy Issues" and all his other little thngs. He disrespected people in the club house and he jumped ship during a pennant race. He should have been fined and benched. He is a baby thats needs to be coddled and it's wrong. The fans in Boston adored him until he knocked down an elderly man because he didn't get his way. He is spoiled rotten. I wonder who is holding his hand now. First it was Kevin Millar and then Julian Tavares.....He is a no good bum that can certainly hit the ball. How is your hammy now Manny???He lacks integrity and loyalty.
here is a reply for dq,and tim im sorry that both of you have bad feelings towards manny, but maybe it was time for a change and everyone once in a while needs a change of venue, so im glad to give a new begining s o that he can rejuenate his focus again, no one is perfect and im willing to back him up as long as he is willing to play the game the way its suppose to be played, and every once in a while im able to go to the dodger games and be right there in the leftfield bleachers, and we will let him have it ,also when you play in dodger stadium, the outfeild wall has almost all of the dodger legends on it so if manny think s he is going to come and play half ass then he is in for a shock, cause we in the lowlife seats lol will let him have it so now you know what some of us do in LA,BUT AS FOR NOW HE IS PLAYING THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED ,LEAVE EVERYTHING ON THE FIELD
Manny is a great hitter period..He is a lousy fielder. He cares about nothing other than himself. His teammates in Boston couldn't take him anymore. He cares about only one thing...dollar bills ..The Red Sox are a weaker offensive group without Manny but overall they are a better team without Manny.
Uh, normally when a team makes a trade, they are expecting to improve their team. Boston did get Jason Bay as part of the deal and so comparing Boston's record after the trade is not a real logical thing to do. Manny's personality has helped the Dodgers loosen up and his bat has won them quite a few games. Without the trade, they would not be in first place in the West right now. Everybody seems to have a different idea as to what qualifications are required for MVP candidates. However, if the Dodgers would not have made the playoffs without Manny and end up making the playoffs with him, that fact alone would seem to qualify him for consideration.
