From the Windup is FanHouse's extended look at a particular portion of America's pastime.
The World Series started after 10:00 pm EST Saturday night.
Next year the World Series will bleed into November.
The winner of the All-Star game (an exhibition) decides home-field advantage in the World Series.
The Houston Astros had to play a "home" game against the Cubs in Milwaukee while their homes were being ravaged by a hurricane.
Look, there are several things Bud Selig has done well for the good of baseball, like the divisional realignment, wild card, and getting tough on performing enhancing drugs (even though he looked the other way as they spiraled out of control); but he's unbelievably bad at managing the schedule of the league. His problem is that he has no foresight. You already have many lifelong baseball fans, including me. We're going to watch no matter what. You're losing the kids and casual fans, though. This group already prefers the speed and excitement brought by football and basketball. Having the first pitch of the World Series take place at 8:30 on a Wednesday night in November -- which it will next year -- does nothing but hurt with this group.
This isn't even delving into the fact that tons of cold weather teams are overloaded each year with home games in April while the Astros, Marlins, Diamondbacks, and Brewers are road-bound. No, I don't want to do that here, because my focus is on the insane scheduling/format in the postseason. We should not be playing baseball in November, and a World Series game should never start after 10:00 pm, especially not on a freaking Saturday night. What an absolute farce. The game ended in dramatic fashion, but that was after 1:00 am. You think casual fans hung around? What's wrong with canceling the game and playing Game 4 Sunday night, Game 5 on the travel day, etc.? Baseball players don't need days off at this point, so don't penalize the fans.
No team gained an advantage from the scheduling, so please don't misconstrue this to be any sort of excuse for anyone. I'm just stating it was an absurd situation from the point of wanting to garner fan support. I'm sure Fox was happy, though, as the game shattered the previous record low rating (6.1, the previous low was 8.0) for a World Series game.
So, Bud, what do I want from you, moving forward? Common sense. That's all. I guess I should elaborate, since you aren't great at figuring things out on your own.
1. Start World Series games at 7:30 pm EST. I mean the actual first pitch. No more of this screwing around for a half hour before actually starting the game. Fox can get their stupid pregame show going at 7:00. This way the game should end around 10:30 to 11:00, and the casual fans and children on the East Coast -- and I'm sorry to those not living there, but it is the largest chunk of the population -- won't be falling asleep before the end of the game. What reason do people have to watch the first three innings if they don't plan on extending themselves past bedtime for the last three? 2. Ditch the World Baseball Classic and don't EVER play games in November. Baseball is a warm weather sport. Unless you get lucky like this year and have Games 6 and 7 inside a dome or in the far south, you are liable to be playing baseball in 30 degree weather. That's ridiculous. It's pushing it to have games in late October as it is, so why push harder? The season starts April 6th next year, due to the awesomeness that is the World Baseball Classic. The last day of the regular season is October 4th, and half of the World Series will be played in November. This is madness. The hot stove should be heating up by then. The WBC, as currently assembled, is not exciting. The series should be more games, and they should not affect the MLB season. Perhaps play it in December and January in Tropical venues? Otherwise just ditch it. It hurts the MLB regular season.
3. No more off days on non-travel days in the playoffs. Thankfully this isn't happening in the World Series, but it's the first round this year where it didn't happen. The players don't need a day off in October. I'm sure it was great for the Phillies players to hang out in LA for a day instead of doing their job, but all this does is extend the series closer and closer to the dreaded month of November.
4. Admit you made a mistake. The All-Star Game is an exhibition game. Each team is required to have one player there. This is the deciding factor in home field advantage for the World Series? It was a stupid idea when put in place, and it's even more stupid after Dan Uggla's awful defense buried the National League this year. Just give it to the team with the best regular season record. Poetic justice that the Rays got it this year, but what if it was Cubs vs. White Sox? Home-field means a huge deal in that series, and the Cubs had a better record ... yet they would have been forced to play four on the Southside.
5. Finally ... when a team is worried about whether or not their hometown still exists because it's being pillaged by Mother Nature, don't force them to travel across the country and play an hour away from their opponent's fan base.
Like I said, I'd just like a little common sense.

Home field advantage in the WS should go to the league with the better record in interleague games. If that's 50-50, then whichever participant team had the better interleague record. Still tied? Then whichever league didn't have the advantage the previous year.

I guess Matt thinks Bud Selig can control the weather.
And he probably needs to consider that Drayton McClane kind of forced Bud's hand by waiting so late to postpone those games in September.

I emphatically agree with #'s 1 and 2. This year, both teams are east coast teams. I would rather see those games start at 7 so I would actually be willing to stay up and watch them. I actually like the All-Star game having some meaning. I'd be open to other ways of accomplishing that, but this home field advantage incentive keeps my interest.
One more item I would've added to my list -- I would love to see the classic doubleheader return (not a big fan of the day-night arrangement). I think MLB should schedule in a few doubleheaders during the year for each team. That way, maybe we wouldn't be playing into November. I would rather the season ends in early-mid October.

Get rid of interleague play. The novelty has worn off.

I live in the central time zone and struggle to make it to the end of games. These start times are ridiculous.

Selig doesn't see the big picture because he's too busy chasing the dollar right now. I guess I don't blame him since he's about 90 years old and won't be around next generation, but some of us would actually like to see baseball flourish again. Look, I know that Bud's point is that the numbers say that viewership grows as the night goes. That may or may not be the case, but I guess I'll take his word for it (although I know no one who is able to stay up for the end of these things). But he's not taking into account two major points: 1. Your number one target for ad dollars is 18-45 year old men with money. Well, most of us in that demographic actually have jobs that require that we start at 7 or 8 a.m. I am as die hard a baseball fan as there is, and I can't justify staying up for all of them or else I can't function the next day. 2. Kids. If you don't give them an opportunity to watch your showcase events, you will never create die hard fans.
I cannot believe how short sighted MLB and Bud are. It is a joke how poorly run this sport is.

Another thing I forgot. They sold their division series and ALCS rights to the highest bidder, TBS. Again, short sighted. The coverage was disjointed and bush league, and the idiots missed the first 20 minutes of game 6 of the ALCS. Unacceptable and weak, and it will add to the loss in viewership. As a baseball fan this poor leadership really pisses me off.

I attended the semis and final game of the inaugural WBC in San Diego and it was amazing. I'm an avid baseball fan and I've never had more fun at a baseball game in my life. I think that any baseball fan should support the opportunity to see international teams play in the US. (I think that the WBC should be played in February so that the season isn't delayed.) Please support the WBC!!

Get back to traditional doubleheaders, oh, but wait, we would lose a gate revenue...they can sell more concessions at a day night doubleheader too...so why don't they schedule day nighters? The players would not like that, but do they like playing in the cold of late Oct/Nov? Qutt giving the teams so many days off during the regular season, they play a 3 hour game, not an 8 to 12 hour work day...Money is the reason for the days off in the playoffs, just as money is to blame for all the poor scheduling and starting times...

baseball can pick up two weeks on the calendar farely simply by every team playing 14 day/night doubleheaders spread out through the season . that will allow the start of the season moved up a week and the season ending a week earlier . no attendance dates will be lost .

Butt Semen is to Baseball as the DEA is on the War on Drugs. Failure. Facts: Bud nominated himself, though he was an owner. Bud took over in '94 in major strife, which caused a work stoppage and no world series. That should have gotten our wheels rolling. Whatcha gonna do Bud? In your Sears Reversable suits? WHAT are you and Donald Fehr going to conjure up? '95, nothing. '96, Yankees Win. Great. But you ain't there. Fan base isn't there. No name Marlins in '97. Great. Still ain't there Butt. (Fehr and Butt meet). We need a home run. We need something that will get fans back in the seats. Ferhr "If I don't got it, you don't need it". Butt "bring it on on, I am hurting here". Fehr, "These players are bigger and more powerful than ever. They are taking these anabolic steroids. Look at them. This is our key to fan replacement. Just watch. A couple of these guys will put them outta the park. 2nd base men will be hitting 50 home runs. Ruths record is gone".
Blind eye, Sousa 66, Mcguire 70. History stands. Both are cheaters and liars. A good friend of mine that played with the Reds. "All baseball players are liars, wife cheaters, do what it takes. They had Red Juice in 1970. "What's that do"? Make you want to run through a wall." "What is is?" "It's what they give to women to induce labor". "Jim, steroids have been in clubhouses since 1980". Oh!
Back to Butt and Fehr. Blind eye? Jose Conseco made them look like assholes.
So what has he done? Lied to Congress. Instituted 3 divisions. Gave us the Wildcard. Elongated the playoffs/Series to November. Screwed up an All-Star Game and has yet to meet/great Pete Rose, Whether you like it or not (I don't care). Have the balls. But has lack of balls. To all that have written comments, I respect you. Hey BUTT, one other thing. Drop the season with double headers. None of that clean the park out for the next paying game..DOUBLE HEADER. One ticket, two games. Tim White

Ah, I missed a couple gems. I, like many of us have the baseball package. I want to see my Yankees, Cards fans want their games, Cleveland, etc. Did you ever notice those Saturday afternoon blackouts? Anyone tell you why? Here's the deal. Fox owns Saturday. They could have a 4pm EST game, BUT, Our teams could play at 1PM. Because of the crossover, ALL games get blacked out, even though your teams game may be over by the time Fox games starts. The McCarver rule. Cause we all love McCarver. I'd like to hire him, just to fire him. Now the logic is, Fox paid Bud and MLB a kaljllion dollars for the rights. Could be two crap teams. We, who paid $170.00 or so, can't see our games thanks to this wonderful contract. Thanks again for screwing us fans. 99% of the time, we are not going to watch Fox, because the game sucks, we hate Buck and McCarver and we would rather paint the garage for the previous reasons.
So there you go. No Saturday games. Period. Call your cable company. Nothing they can do. Call any provider. Nothing they can do.
So, once again, Bud has screwed us. Don't they make enough money to the rights of MLB. You see your kid wearing an MLB uniform. Know why they cost so much? Ah, The MLB tax and franchise fees. All Little Leagues should go back to "Joe's Bowling" and shove it up Buds ass. Only a billion Little League teams. More later.
