I was in Philadelphia for Game 3 of the NLCS and after the game wrapped up there were ladies from a local strip club handing out fliers outside the stadium. They offered free admission to the club with a ticket stub from that night's game which indicates that some baseball fans like to cap off the quest for baseball destiny with a few lap dances from a gal calling herself Destiny. That business plan is being copied by an entrepreneur in Seattle who hopes to open a strip club 400 yards from Safeco Field. The Mariners don't want it there because they're thinking of the children.
Arguing with the vehemence of former Mariners manager Lou Piniella, the ballclub says the proposed business violates a city rule that prohibits strip clubs within 800 feet of open space or public parks where children congregate. The club's lawyer, Peter Buck (presumably not the one from REM), says that a baseball stadium isn't covered by that exception, however, and argues that the team is making an argument of taste and not zoning.
I think they're making an argument in favor of their own best interests. Did anyone see the Mariners play baseball this season? Would you rather watch Kenji Johjima flail at pitches or watch a busty lady twirl around a pole? The M's can't win that battle and should fight this competition with every weapon at their disposal.
