After a 46-hour rain delay, the Philadelphia Phillies finally finished off the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the World Series with a 4-3 win to clinch the 2008 World Series. They got lead off doubles from Geoff Jenkins in the sixth and Pat Burrell in the seventh and both runs came home to score, which gave them the edge after the restart in the sixth inning at 2-2.
It's their first World Championship since the 1980 World Series and Philly's first title in any sports since 1983. It's likely that Phillies' fans could care less if Peter Gammons thinks the rainout made this the worst World Series ever. Cole Hamels didn't get the win, but he did pick up the MVP award for the Series thanks to his two solid starts in Games 1 and 5.
As for the Rays, well, every key player should be back from their 97-win team that came awfully close to winning the World Series. They're incredibly young and the sky is the limit for many of their players. They're in an awfully tough division, but they're not going back to the punchline that they used to be.

So will this victory be less remembered than the Bud Selig Rule-Change-At-Will debacle that infuriated so many ESPN talking heads, Yahoo sports writers, and the like?

The Redsox would have had no shot against the Phillies team that was out there this past few weeks. This team was the best team in baseball in all aspects of the game.It looked like every month of the season this team got better and better as for the deadsox they are in for a long ugly season if they dont do something with that team. They can't win on the what if's and the remember last years. They need to rebuild and they will get beat by this young tampa team again next year. Keep blowing your money Boston and watch a small market team with a real gm take you out. you spent all that money as the rays have the 29th payroll in the year and kicker your butts. It going to be the the rays and the yankees from your division next year, you clown.

Pat it was great to see Cole Hamles win the Double MVPS like WIlllie Stargel did for you Pirates years ago. To win the in 2 both series its was great. It has only happend 5 times and twice were in PA. Way to go Cole and way to keep it in the Famliy like the Pirates were. I just hope the Phillies can make it 2 in a row like the Pirates did. We are young and going to pretty much the same team next year, other then Pat the Bat I don't see this roster changing much as for the Rays I see the same so can anyone here say Repeat. I know its a bit early but why not. The Rays are going to have pretty much the same team next year to and to tell ya the truth from the start of the series i thought the only the the Phillies had on the Rays was experience and after this year we won't have that. Boston, N.Y. Yankees and the Mets will spend the money but Philly and Tampa have the HEART.

Although I dislike Philadelphia teams, I offer congratulations to the Phillies. They deserved to win the Series, because they were the best TEAM in baseball. They all contributed and played unselfishly, unlike most other MLB clubs like the Mets, whose Me First attitudes led them to their 2nd straight September collapse.

It was a wonderful thing to see the players reactions to the win after the last strike was thrown. They looked like young kids racing to the mound, displaying complete unbridled joy. You can tell that they love playing the game and this was the culmination of a lifetime of dreams. The money they make doesn't seem to mean as much after seeing this display of emotion. Thank you Phillies.
