New Giants managing partner, William Neukom, has reportedly pushed general manager Brian Sabean to field a much more competitve team. If that means opening the pocketbook to bring in big names, so be it. Obviously, the subject of Manny Ramirez qualifies. When asked about him, Neukom replied: "I can't say there is no possibility." Of course, later he raved about the shape of their outfield and said that shoring any part of it up was not a high priority. The bottom line here for Giants fans is that this sort of talk is a good thing. Management is obviously planning on increasing the payroll, which means signing a few offensive weapons is a definitey possibility.
"Player payroll is going to depend on two things," Neukom said. "First of all (is) the best thinking of our baseball guys. What does that optimal 2009-and-beyond roster look like? How do you build that roster? That's going to have a price tag to it. The other major influence is, what can we afford?"I know what direction I'd go. There's no reason to start dealing in the trade market when you can throw some money around, and this shows the Giants aren't afraid to. It might not be Manny, but Mark Teixeira and several other big bats are out there. We'll see how the Giants work.

boycott Manny ...
As long as Brian Sabaen is GM of this team, The Giants are destined to failure. Under his big fat nose was Joe Nathan (13-3) that year and Sabaen traded Nathan to Minn for AJ Perjerkoff. Sabaen has been a gun shy GM since. He needs to leave baseball and make wine.
Actually, he also sent Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser with Nathan for Pierzynski.
Really brutal trade, considering the lackluster work done by AJ during his short stint in SF.
Really, hasn't anyone noticed that the NY Giants are a football team and not a baseball team????? Who is reporting this story, maybe they ought to get the teams correct???? So is it the NY Mets, or the NY Yankees they're talking about!!! I'm surprised all you sports fan haven't noticed this??? And, no Boston doesn't want him back either, as far as we're concerned he can travel to the ends of the earth.
Pat:
Everyone knows the Giants don't play in New York, and no one ever mentioned New York.
I'm guessing you misread the first line where I said "New Giants managing partner ...."
He was recently hired. That's what the "new" means in that sentence.
Sabean is an arrogant loser hiding behind his stupid gotee.
If Colletti lets Manny slip away to the Giants...I want Neds job. He should be fired just for allowing him to go to the Hated Giants
bring bonds back
I will burn my LA Doger shirt with Many on the back if he joins that loser Giant team
GIANTS SUCK!
chazlvv: Really? Cool!! Can I watch it burn??!!
The Giants don't need Manny. They need to sign a QUALITY starter that can be the new ace. I know it sounds crazy but imagine the advantage of moving the current starters down so that the Cy Young winners get to pitch in the 2 and 5 slots! They will be that much better and offense would not be as important. Play to your strengths and put together the killer staff that you have the opportunity to do with just cash.... no loss of prospects!!
Manny plays only for himself! What goes around comes around... Dude's a moron! Dodgers can do better!
Manny, Go back to Beantown (Boston) where you belong.
No, thanks,....Boston had enough of Manny being Manny.
Yeah, we don't want him back. I'd like to see him...in Canada maybe. Somewhere cold.
We do not want Mammy in Boston.
Mannay being Manny was not so good.
We got a great player for Manny who is a team player
Well, if I were the Giants, I go all or nothing. I sign C.C. Sabathia, Mark Tex, and Manny. I would also push to sign another one of the quality starters on the market. Figure Manny and Tex will bring in the needed offense while C.C., Lincecum, and one more quality guy would hold down the rotation aiding an ailing Barry Zito.
Wow, great strategy! I wonder why other teams have never thought of that. Now just help everyone figure out where that annual $60+ million will come from and your genius can be fully appreciated.
Joe - I think I get what you are proposing, but why? If having the "best" pitcher in the National League isn't enough for your "Ace", then throwing money at another first line starter just to game pitching match ups seems ridiculous. The point of having an ace, the main stopper on you team is to match him against an opponent's ace to give you team a better chance to win. No matter what you might think, there are only so many "aces" out there, and most of the best ones aren't available for trade. Their clubs also want to win. Lincicum (sp) will be their ace as long as he wants to be.
