Right now, everyone knows the numbers CC Sabathia has on his table. The Brewers have offered CC $100 million over four years. The Yankees have offered him $140 million over six. These offers are, of course, liable to change, especially if another team gets involved in the bidding. For now, though, everyone's been focusing on the big number thrown out by the Yankees and whether Sabathia will spurn the city he says he fell in love with for they money. As always, though, there's more to things than the numbers. Jeff Sackmann at Brew Crew Ball breaks down the two offers and considers cost of living in New York and Milwaukee, as well as the effect of contract length on future earning potential and determines that the Yanks' offer might not be as great as people think.
Jeff makes some great points, but I'd like to extend his point about contract length and future earning potential a bit. If Sabathia signs in Milwaukee, he's going to be one of the best pitchers on the planet. In the AL, he was a Cy Young winner. In the NL, he was an alien beamed in from outer space with the sole purpose of eliminating hitters from the face of the planet.
Of course, it's impossible to know what a player will or won't do, but it seems like there's a good chance that Sabathia could dominate the National League for a long time if he stuck around. What would Sabathia's Yankee career look like? His numbers likely wouldn't be nearly as impressive in the AL East and if he doesn't win a World Series in New York, not unlikely given their scattershot management and the strength of the AL East, after signing a monstrous package, well, maybe he should ask Mike Mussina just how far being really, really good gets you in New York if you don't win a World Series.
Certainly, there are things to be said for signing for six years, for signing with the Yankees and playing in baseball's division and on its biggest stage, and of course, for taking all of that money. In the end, there may be truth to the rumors that the MLBPA will make Sabathia accept the bigger offer from New York. At the same time, to simply dismiss the Brewers because their offer isn't for as much money is foolish

Great points in the article and sooner or later one of these guys is going to realize that $100 million is a ton of money. Especially if he can stay healthy and hit the bank again in 4 years.

Don't be surprised if CC doesn't start talking to the Giants who are rumored of thinking of offering him something between 100 - 140 million. He has stated that he wants to play on the west coast and SF is twenty five miles from his home town. He would treated like a hero in SF instead of a passing fancy
in NY. With him in the rotation with Linscum and Cain, and with the acquisition of one power hitter, the Giant's would be leaders in their division.

They would still need a second power hitter. Because after all, one power hitter can be pitched around.

You'd have to be a total moron to even think they have anything at all in common with these players. That's it for me. I take up watching the grass grow rather than support mega millionaires.

If CC stays in Milwaukee, Brewers fans will make him a near-God, like Favre was for the Packers.

This author is either out of his mind or letting his bias show "given their scattershot management" This management has produced winners for a long time 6 SW & how many penents...
Come on Jerky "scattershot management" what team has been more successful?
The yankees still had a better record than 2 of the teams that made the payoff and their ace went down after 2 months, how many teams could do that?
PS I'm a Rays fan saying this... you would have to be a moron not to see the truth. We all hate the Yankees but they are the best because of their management.

Wait..he'd be an a**hole to NOT take the money? He'd be an a**hole to decide NOT to become a Yankee (where being an a**hole is considered a desirable trait)? Hulk, what green things have you been smoking? LOL
Lots of players in every major sport have given a hometown discount, whether it's an adopted hometown or not. Carsten Charles put out a full-page add in the Plain Dealer thanking Cleveland for the hospitality. He is obviously not just about the money.

Hulk pros make enough money that they dont have to go to the highest bidder. They'll be rich no matter where they go, so why not take less and still be rich, and play somewhere that makes you happy!
HULK SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE BROKE FAN!!!! You really should think before you write such dumba$$ comment!!!

As for management, all they do is buy overpriced ball players, any child could do that. Buy the best talent, you win, wow thats really deep. I'll show you how great their management is, the great owner let one of the best baseball managers ever go, because he took up to much of the Boss's spotlight. Yeah they have great management!
