Pedro Martinez has talked retirement in the recent past, in the context of hanging 'em up if he were to have another bad injury. That injury never came, so Pedro, as a free agent, is planning on pitching in 2009. "I haven't really thought about baseball. But I do want to play. I'm not going to talk about it until January. I'm away from all that. I know I'm a free agent. One thing - I'm getting ready because I know how long it takes to get ready. I'm working out. I'm doing everything I have to do," said Martinez. "Right now, I'm fishing, training and at home with the family."Pedro has the luxury of not having to think about his future plans until then. Because sadly, he's nowhere near any team's top priority these days. Pedro will come back as a fifth starter on a good team at best.
Will that good team be the Mets? We'll probably know more after the winter meetings, when we'll find out if the Mets are able to sure up their rotation or not. If Omar Minaya is able to bring back Oliver Perez, or sign Derek Lowe or Jon Garland to fill a hole in the middle of the rotation, then there would be no need for Martinez. If none of the above happen, and there isn't another mediocre starter to be had, then you may see Pedro return. But there are too many pitchers over Pedro on the list to imagine that not one other option will be signed by the Mets. So it seems, for now, that Pedro's days as a Met are done.
