You can count on Rafael Furcal not receiving a Christmas card from Frank Wren and the Braves organization in this holiday season. Just two days after the Braves believed they had landed their old/new shortstop, Furcal is signing a deal to stay put in Los Angeles, where he has spent the past three seasons. The Braves are upset with Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer. "We were very surprised," he said. "After reaching an agreement on Monday night, and being asked to produce a term sheet for signature on Tuesday morning, which we did, we were surprised that they didn't return the term sheet. ... All of a sudden, they said they needed to go back to the Dodgers."I'm not very familiar with the signing process between agents and general managers, but it would seem Wren is claiming Kinzer took one extra step. According to him, a deal was in place and then they went back to the Dodgers to use more leverage.
"I think you have to be upset with the turn of events," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "We usually don't do business this way. You don't expect people you have to deal with to do business that way."
According to Kinzer, however, that's not quite a true story.
"They (Braves) know we didn't have a signed contract, that we didn't have even a verbal agreement," said Kinzer, hours before Wren gave a very different account. "We had, 'Things look very good and Raffy's going to sleep on it.'"This is actually a pretty solid verbal feud, but judging from these statements alone, don't you have to back Furcal and Kinzer? Nothing was signed, and all of a sudden the media catches wind -- from Wren's people -- that Furcal has "signed," when he really hadn't. What's that proverb? Something about counting chickens, hatching, etc.?
"It's not done until we sign off and there's a physical exam," he told ESPN.com Tuesday, "and we haven't gotten that far. Until a letter of agreement is signed, we don't even start the process to get him to Atlanta for a physical."
Regardless, when the dust settles, Furcal will be leading off and playing shortstop for the Dodgers for the next three years, reportedly for $33 million.
The Braves, this offseason, have now completed a deal for Javier Vazquez, but lost out on A.J. Burnett and failed to land Jake Peavy via trade. This situation with Furcal just adds to the offseason of disappointment -- which may be, in part, leading to the frustration being demonstrated by Wren.

as a true Dodger fan, Ned did a really smart move to re-sign Raffy. Even though, yeah he was injuried most of the time as Dodger, but healthy he can really hit. It's a gamble worth taking on my opinon. Now it's Manny!!

I agree Shonda. I actually went out last night to celebrate Raffy's return to the Braves. He was one of my favorite players with Atlanta and then he left to play for the Dodgers...bleh! :( Now it's reported that he was coming back and I was so excited...now he's gone again. NNOOOOO!!! Atlanta better go out and sign more pitching in a hurry. But I'm sure the Yanks will just double whatever they offer and continue to ruin the game of baseball. I'm sooooo sick of all of the store-bought teams in MLB...why develop talent when you can just purchase all of it...LOSERS!

If the Braves want to sign an ex-Brave playing for the Dodgers, I'm sure that the Dodgers would give them Andruw Jones. Cheap.

I'd be more upset if the Braves had lost out on a quality right fielder, something they actually need.

Paul Kinzer is trash, you do business with no one. congrats on a closer and a shortstop atlanta brought into the game that just crapped on us. Kizer and Furcal are trash. i bleed Braves baseball and im disgusted by both of you. Dodgers enjoy paying him millions to ride the pine. Furcal you know where you made your name way to shaft us. Rot in hell!!

The problem is most of the agents are dirtbags. Can't trust any of them. Baseball badly needs a salary cap, but that will never happen. This way, teams like the Yankees can't spend $300 million to lock up the best players, and shut out the small market teams. MLB will eventually alienate enough fans to cause a backlash against high prices and too many weak teams. But they'll probably try and expand and further dilute the existing talent base.

Hey Eric...I didn't notice ANYONE talking about the Mets except for you...are you huffing glue again? The Braves are known for being one of the classiest organizations in MLB due to their fans, coaching, and teammates. Though it is true that they lost many chances to go to the World Series, it is the Mets that have taken a page from the Yankees and have sought to BUY a World Series title. YOUR team are choke artists because of your poor coaching, disgusting fans, and overall toxic store-bought playing environment. Many Braves fans may live simple lives, but as you called them in your broken English; they are not "honkie red necks". I'm sure you are still upset about John Rocker (who is a bit pissed at the World) who called your city the way he saw it...but anyone would be pissed at a city that allows their fans to throw D-Cell batteries at rival team's players. Mets fans are a bunch of scum-bags (for the most part), and should be ashamed of themselves. You have purchased a solid team, and actually have some good guys playing for you...how about you show THEM some respect and shut YOUR ignorant mouth.
