Free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira is expected to make a decision on his new team in the very near future, potentially even in the next 24-to-48 hours. In the meantime, we're all stuck devouring the latest scraps from the rumor mill.On Tuesday, I wrote that Teixeira should choose the Orioles. Now, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, Baltimore has essentially dropped out of the bidding, by refusing to upgrade its initial seven-year offer.
"The Orioles are out of it, unless Teixeira really, really wants to play there," said one source. It's not all that surprising that the O's are falling behind in the chase for Teixeira. They can't offer him the chance to be on a winner, at least right away, they don't have the financial resources that the Red Sox, Angels or Yankees do and they aren't a Tom Hicks-esque wild card in the bidding like the Nationals appear to be.
On the flip side of things, the Red Sox appear to have moved to the front of the line for Teixeira's services. A general manager of one of the five teams involved in the bidding told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe as much.
"I think they're in the lead and ahead of where everyone else is right now," the GM said. "I'm not sure who's bidding against them at this point."By design, Boston has been the quietest of all the teams in on Teixeira. While there's a fairly concrete idea of what the Nationals, Orioles and Angels have offered the slugger, we can only speculate with the Red Sox.
Asked whether he thought the talks would end soon, he said, "You just never know where Scott Boras and the Red Sox are involved."
Their offer is rumored to be the largest in team history, which would push it past $160 million, the total value of Manny Ramirez's contract with Boston, but owner John Henry told the Boston Herald Wednesday morning that he wouldn't give the first baseman a 10-year deal.
Either way, the Red Sox are clearly going way out of their way to try and secure Teixeira. Despite their status as a big-market club, the current regime in Boston has only rarely doled out contracts longer than four or five years and worth more than $50 million. It will also have to move either Kevin Youkilis, Mike Lowell or David Ortiz to accomodate Teixeira in the event that he signed.
Tex is going to have to be pretty special for the Red Sox to justify doing all of that.

Evil Empire Beware, Sleeping giant Red Sox Nation speaks softly but carries a big stick. Teixeira style ball player fits well into Red Sox long term plans. While Ortiz has gotten older and slower, like the not so fine aging of Mo Vaughn and other big brwarny sluggers who have limited duration, Teixeira mo is that he will stay in shap for the long term and has Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia enthusiasm as well as team spirit, Unlike A Rod, CC and Manny ...if you know what I mean, which fits into red Sox long term picture of success. Youkilis goes to 3rd- gold glove- strong bat, Texeira to 1st...harmony and great lineup is maintained. If Ortiz can lose weight, and get wrist healthy, then Pedroia,Ellsbury, Youkillis, Teixeira, Ortiz, Bey, JD Drew Line up is best in power and speed in MLB. Who cares about catcher and short stop hitting 225, with potent lineup ahead of them.
Go red Sox Go...straight to 2009 World Series.

Rick - I agree with you and Lowrie is the utility infielder taking Cora's place. Take ANYTHING that you can get for Lugo. Lowell has to stay in Boston.

Hi!
I'm Kristin, a University of Pennsylvania psychology student and a huge baseball fan. I am currently conducting an honors thesis study on clutch ability and psychological characteristics of Major league baseball players. I made a survey asking fans to rate players from various teams on certain characteristics. One of these teams is the Nationals and it would be great to have some Nationals fans fill out my survey and rate their favorite players. Here is some background info:
What is "clutch"? What players are considered "clutch" performers? What players are "gritty" or have natural talent? Are these players also "clutch"? These frequently cited terms in the game of baseball have rarely been objectively studied. I have created a survey asking about some Major League players' characteristics and it would be great if some of you, being huge baseball fans, could fill it out! It should only take a maximum of 10 minutes. Also, I would love to hear any comments that you have about my survey! Thanks so much for all your help!
Here is the website for my survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VUWValhJzb65tk1lZoMMEQ_3d_3d

Tex at 1st is a must. Youk to 3rd base. Trade Lowell for middle relief. Get Xaxier Nady for right field and trade Drew for whatever you can get. Dynamite lineup, pitching already outstanding. Bite the dust Yankees.

I dont know what all of you Red Sox fans are doing pounding you chests assuming you have signed Tex. The Yanks can give him not only the money but also the 10 year deal he wants more than anything else. Plus the ability to make a new historic landmark stadium his home instead of a stadium that should have been condemmed 10 years ago.....

I believe Tex is the missing part of the puzzle that would put the Yankees over the top, and make them serious contenders for a World Series in '09, they can afford to do it, but are they willing to do it is another story. What the Yankees can't afford, is to allow the Red Sox to sign him.

This deal isn't done yet. Olney's theory is based on the flawed logic that 7 years and $150M is vastly inferior to 8 yrs and $160M. Do the math. So far those are the only numbers out there and there are no indications any team will go more than 8 years, and the O's have said their offer is flexible and it hardly would require Tex to take a huge hometown discount, as Buster indicated.

Papi was hurt most of last year. With Tex hitting 4 Ortiz would soon regain his stroke while also being more healthy. Get Tex, pick up Peavey in a trade and the Yanks will be suckin bad gas. If you can't get Peavey think about Lowe, a sinker baller with the Bosox infield. This will be a beautiful year for Boston, a beautiful 5 years if we get Tex but you Papi doubters, I believe, are just plain wrong.

Dateline 2010- Yankees request bailout. Huge payroll, new 1.3 billion dollar stadium. Fans decide to buy groceries rather than spend major money to see a medicore (Injuries) team. Wake up, the business risk is much greater than you think. Who would have ever thought that the Big Three would be broke? It is just entertainment after all. Discrestionary income is never a given. These salaries are offensive in this time of unprecendated ecomomic downturn. The Babe was playing when things were last this bad.
