Just as quickly as the Red Sox appeared on the verge of a blockbuster deal for Mark Teixeira, owner John Henry, president Larry Lucchino and general manager Theo Epstein boarded a plane in Dallas and returned home with no deal in hand.
In fact, all they seem to have is the complete opposite, an indication from Teixeira and Boras that an agreement will never be reached.
"We are not going to be a factor," said Henry in an e-mail Thursday night. If we take that statement at its face value, then Boston has been outbid for Teixeira. That's certainly a possibility, even considering the Red Sox's rumored eight-year, $184 million offer to the first baseman. He's a special player. The Yankees and Angels have the resources to best the Sox. The Nationals seem so wildly intent on landing Teixeira that they too could have topped Boston as well.
But this could all be a negotiating ploy on the part of Henry and the Red Sox.
Scott Boras isn't above negotiating ploys of his own. He's made his name by getting top dollar for numerous players over the year, a reputation he cemented by getting teams to bid against themselves, often inventing mystery suitors for his clients to accomplish that goal.
Take another look at the missive Henry sent to reporters last night, this time with nothing redacted:
"We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him," Henry said. "After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."Read another way, in another tone and context, Henry's e-mail could simply be seen as a way of publicly calling Boras' bluff.
For starters, it's interesting that Henry begins by complimenting Teixeira in a formal fashion. He doesn't call him "Mark," opting instead for "Mr. Teixeira." He's extremely respectful -- careful not to burn any bridges -- and perhaps sending a signal to him that this is nothing personal.
There are two interesting word choices in the rest of the statement. "Offers." The Red Sox's rumored bid is the highest that has been leaked to the media. Now there are multiple "offers" on the table in excess of the $170-$184 million range? Considering the Yankees have publicly said they have not extended Teixeira an offer, that means Boras told Boston officials two other teams have come in over the top of its bid. That's awfully suspect considering there are only three other teams in on the first baseman.
The second key word is "seems." That's a word you use to convey uncertainty. It leaves the door open for other potential outcomes, perhaps even the complete opposite one.
Sure, Henry could be softening the blow for Red Sox Nation after weeks of rising hope that culminated in Thursday's flight and face-to-face meeting with Teixeira and Boras. He could also be playing hardball -- challenging Boras to produce the mystery team(s) that "seem" to have outbid Boston.
If I had to wager, I'd put money on the latter. Either way, this is a high-stakes game the Red Sox and Boras are playing, and there's no clear resolution in sight.

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I might be after this. Another term for "mystery clients" is: "Boras is a liar." Bravo to Henry for calling his bluff.

Boras is a bloodsucker, the more money he gets for Texiera the more money he gets and the more money the fan has to pay to see a game, plain and simple, Kudos Henry.

As I've said many times before, Scott Boras is a lying scumbag piece of doodykaka. The Red Sox front office has always acted with class. If Boras is lying then Tex should be pissed at him. I think he'd rather be with a contender like the Sox than w/ the Nats who will require some time and more talent before they can become contenders. And if he wanted to stay w/ the Angels on the left coast he certainly could have come to an agreement with them by now. I hear his spousal equivalent is happier on the right coast.
170-184 mill is certainly not chump change. I mean how much do you need to be happy, after all?

I heard from a friend (with the Yanks) yesterday morning that the yanks told Scott @ the winter meetings, that the yanks would go as high as 9yrs/185mm - 195MM to keep Mark out of Boston. But have no intention of signing Mark T.
They were driving up the price and put nothing in writing, when I heard this I did not believe it, now after what as happpened I think the Yanks just F*CKED the Sox...
And if the Sox end up signing Mark T. didn't Henry just pull a Steinbrenner.

Bore-Ass is the lovely vehicle that screwed aroud with A-Rod and the Uankees in the middle of the 2007-08 playoffs if I recall correctly.
A word of truth eminating from his mouth would be rarer than me beating Tiger Woods.
John Henry did not get to be as rich as he is without a lot of subtle negotiating skills. I wonder if he has something up his sleeve.

Unless Boras can come up with the names of the teams that have outbid the Sox, and those bids would have already been leaked out, then I say the Sox should "walk", and let Boras and Tex stew and chew their nails for a couple of weeks. IF he should come forward and now except the Sox offer, the Sox should stick it to him by NOT resigning Varitek, who's NOT worth half of what he wants--and should refrain from most of Boras' clients in the future. This guy got his "rep" by lying and manipulation, which I consider dishonest. He needs to be taught a lesson. Perhaps that's why A-fraud dumbed him.

Greedy players like greedy and dishonest agents. How much is enough Teixeira? Like they say, "how many yachts can you water ski behind"? I know that I'd be embarrassed to get a contract for the kind of numbers they're throwing around---but that's just me. Then again, honesty and modesty have always gotten me kicked in the teeth.

Any type of official contract offers should be turned into MLB offices by the bidding team and should be able to be viewed to other teams so the agents can't pull this "mystery bidder" crap and drive up the prices unnecessarily.. The contract should have a term limit to be accepted or declined by the player / agent and should be honored if the player accepts.. These players make millions upon millions at this point it's guys like Boras ruin the game

This is all a ploy by Boras to get more money or something else out of the Sox (opt-out, no trade). If he claims to be the player he is then Teixeira wouldn't sign with the Nationals over the Red Sox or Angels. I posted my thoughts on Teixeira earlier.

It looks like Texiera is just as greedy as his agent is. What's the difference in ten-twenty million, when you already can have $150-160 in your pocket. Tex, go where your heart tells you. Go home where the heart is.

Why does Tex have to make a decision now? Wait til February.
His value will not deminish. Look, there's not a person on here that wouldnt take all the money they can get. If (and I seriously doubt) the Sox are calling his bluff, go all they way. Pull the offer.

I don't blame Boras for wanting to get the most for his clients ,this is the name of his game,in the off season he gets to negotiate with Fat Cats like John Henry, whats wrong with that and if he is working 1 team against another this is his game so what, and as far as you thinking that this is wrong Henry would take Tex for a buck if Boras let him so whos the Greedy ones, and lets not forget how much it costs us to take our Family to a game, its crazy!I think if the salarys were lower they would still charge crazy money to go to a game,Henry isn't in this for only the love of the game my friends,he likes the Green as much as Tex,Boras and everyone else reading this blog!BOYCOTT BASEBALL AND SEE IF YOU HAVE A SAY IN THE MATTER!
