There are some baseball players destined to be never forgotten, completely regardless of their actual baseball abilities. Randall Simon is one of those players. In the early part of his career, he was briefly featured in the famous John RockerSports Illustrated story as a player that Rocker had referred to be a racial epithet. Later, he moved on to Pittsburgh and even a stint in Baseball Siberia wasn't enough to keep Simon off the radar. In July of 2003, he took his bat and knocked the Italian Sausage off her feet and into the Polish Sausage during the nightly Sausage Race at Miller Park. The tragic or hilarious (depending on your perspective) video is embedded above.
Today word is out that Simon is attempting a comeback with none other than the Milwaukee Brewers, as he's planning on showing up at an open tryout in Arizona with, among others, Mark Bellhorn. Doug Melvin is apparently not holding the incident against him, probably at least partially because Simon bought sausage for the entire section behind the visitor's dugout to apologize for the transgression.
In reality, Simon probably doesn't have much of a chance to make the club. He's been mostly out of the big leagues since 2004 (he had 23 ABs with the Philies in 2006), he's never been in great shape, and he's jealous of Jeff Francouer's plate discipline. But none of that matters. Randall Simon will forever me the man that terrorized a sausage in Miller Park and we'll never forget him for that.
