Who would have ever thought Manny Ramirez would be unsigned this offseason as we rapidly approach February? He wore a Superman cape for the last two months of the season for the Dodgers, and here he is, unemployed on January 23. Even though David Wright lobbied for the them to go after the eccentric power-hitter earlier this week, it's not going to be the Mets who break down and sign Ramirez. Jeff Wilpon -- COO of the Mets -- said that it's not ownership who isn't interested, but the Mets' general manager, Omar Minaya.
"I know the perception out there again is that ownership said no," Wilpon said. "I don't have the opportunity to say no because Omar hasn't brought it to me as an option. Omar and the baseball staff aren't interested."I'm not quite sure what the problem is. The Mets are trying to overtake the Phillies after two consecutive September choke-jobs. Manny put the Dodgers on his back down the stretch. Left field for the Mets right now is a mess. They could start Daniel Murphy, though he appears ticketed for second base. The other options would be Fernando Tatis, Marlon Anderson, Angel Pagan, or possibly Jeremy Reed.
It seems as though the "small market" cries from fans were legitimate. I'm not one of those fans who thinks throwing money at problems will always solve them, but signing Manny -- along with Ben Sheets -- would definitely make the Mets a better team for 2009.

sign manny asap,,,,,,,,mets dont let him get away..........ben sheets,o perez,.....come on omar....lets do it.
Sign Manny ASAP....He's a Yankee & Playoff killer....Mets don't let him get away also sing Ben Sheets to compete with the Phillies.
HOW NEEDS MANNY, NOTHING BUT TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, Manny is nothing but trouble....FOR EVERY OPPOSING TEAM THAT THE METS WILL PLAY!
OMAR NEEDS TO BE FIRED............AND WE NEED TO GET MANNY NOW
Obviously the Wilpon's are using Omar as their fall guy.I have been a Mets fan since the days of M.Donald Grant & the Wilpon's obviously caught his disease of stupididty.
Hey, we should talk to Barrak Obama to help these baseball teams. Maybe, he could let some of the Guantanomo Bay prisoners he let out to come and play for baseball.
Hey RKO, just by your stupid comments I get the feeling you are a complete idiot. What does the president have to do with the Mets you jerk.
we need manny if we want to compete with the phillies.minaya this your chace to save your job.lets be contenders not pretenders.
Without Manny who is a perfect fit for Left Field in Shea and another consistent starter whose name is not Perez the Mets will be lucky to finish ahead of the Marlins in third. I grew up in Corona in the 60's and 70's and have lived and died with the Mets.I am monumentally disappointed with their continued failures.
Manny is expensive and a nut job but he is a first class bat and one that puts the Mets over the top. And i believe that a ten million dollar two year deal with incentives on Ben Sheets is a bet worth taking .
hey nelson grow up.
As a Mets fan I am very disappointed with the way the Mets brass approached this whole off-season. Even though they did add K-Rod and Putz to the bullpen they did not add a everyday impact player. Look at there cross town rivals, they signed two quality starters and a very good solid every day player. The Mets had two late season meltdowns, now it's late January and we're fielding the very same team as last year. You tell me which team is more committed to winning?
Omar Minaya
Please get Manny Ramirez and Ben Sheets if you want to give the Mets fans the opportunity to enjoy a Championship along with a brand new Stadium, think abou it and not for too long because the chances may be gone by the time you decide.
I honestly think the smartest thing for the Yankees to do right now is jump on the Manny train. At first the thought disgusted me LOL but they still need another bat. I bet he would be excited to play against them Bo Sox. Yankees are quiet about it right kind of like when it came down to Mark Teixera then all of a sudden bam they got Mark. They, the Yanks, havent said yay or nay at this point. Mannys only deal right now is he really shouldnt expect a 4 or 5 year deal 25 mill per year ok but at 2 years with an option for another year only if he gives the numbers they hope for. But what do I know i'm just a girl hehe :)
Go Yankees!!!!
Hey Cupey,
Grow up!!!!!
hey rat just relax.go mets.
Manny is a MUST to sign for the outfield along with another top starter in the rotation. If they do not sign both they will NEVER BE A CONTENDER and NEVER sell seats along with their PSL's! That commment from wilpon's son is BS by making it sound as though Omar Minaya doesn't want him. Bottom line is that the word on the street is they don't have the $$ due to all the money they lost in the madoff ponzi scheme.
I am tired of watching them fold and right now Philadelphia looks much stronger on paper. They need new ownership who will be in it to win it. At least the Yankees put their money where their mouth is. In fact, I hope the Yankees sign Manny for two reasons: one for the mets oraganization sitting on their hands once again and the second reason is it would have a better impact on their rival games with the red sox so NY can have at least one championship !
omar does need to be fired. we have collapsed for two straight seasons and he has not done a fricken thing to help us beat the phillies. yeah, he helped the bullpen but he has not helped the offense which about 60% of our problems last year in September. Go out and GET MANNY. Sometimes I think this is like a major league type of think were the owner/gm wants the team to lose.
