You may remember back in 2001 when Barry Bonds was in the midst of his chase of the single-season home run record, there was a lot of talk about his possible steroid use. (If you don't remember, then how was your trip to Antarctica, anyway?) There was also a quote from Bonds at the time in which he said that baseball could test him every day and he'd never test positive. Of course, considering that we sit here eight years later and there still isn't a reliable test for HGH, that doesn't exactly say much. What does say something is a report that appeared in the New York Times early Thursday morning. In what could be an incredibly big blow to his defense in his upcoming perjury trial, the paper is saying that authorities have some urine samples from Bonds that tested positive for steroids.
A person who has reviewed the evidence said that the authorities detected anabolic steroids in urine samples linked to Bonds that they gathered in connection with their investigation. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity. So while Bonds may have dodged a bullet with the clear not being considered a steroid at the time he was allegedly using it, this will be a little harder to explain. After all, Bonds is going to trial on charges of perjury because he told a grand jury in 2003 that not only had he never taken the cream or the clear, but that he had never taken any other steroid of any kind.
The evidence could be significant because questions have been raised about whether the "clear," which like the "cream" was created to avoid detection in drug tests, was technically a steroid under federal law when Bonds testified before a federal grand jury in November 2003.
A positive urine test would say otherwise, which would mean that Bonds lied to the grand jury. Now, I'm not some fancy pants lawyer, but I'm pretty sure getting caught lying is never a good thing when you're facing perjury charges.
Also, to make matters worse for Bonds, the FBI stormed into the home of his former trainer Greg Anderson's mother-in-law. While there's no way of knowing whether they found any incriminating evidence in the raid, it's just as likely that they weren't even looking for any in the first place.
Odds are they're just trying to make Anderson's life a living hell so they can get him to testify against Bonds in their case against him.

How funny that these people are so excited about this story ... Did anyone go after Palmero or McGwire? How many years before they go after Rocket? How about John McCains lies to the public? GW Bush or Dick Cheney? The act like this will change the world somehow! This is about making Bonds the scapegoat for owners making billions while hundreds and ... yes ... thousands of athletes taking steroids since the late 1950's. I'll be damned if I want my tax money wasted on such insane BS! Barry is no worse that the thousands before him who used drugs to enhance their performances ... and of course most fans would love to hang it all on Barry so their hero's don't get the heat! Baseball is big business and they turned their heads because they were lining their pockets with CASH! Make MLB Owners pay ... no some over ego'ed jock! This is STUPID!

Dear Mr. Reikllight,
Do not defend Barry Bonds. Rajah the Fat Boy child molester will soon be indicted for perjury in his "statements" to Congress December 2007.
The prosecution is not about steroids of both these overpaid clowns. It is about lying to a grand jury and Congres.
If there is to a functioning legal system in this country, a person cannot get away with lying.

Reikilight you forgot to mention the lying criminal Obama. Selective memory maybe or just turning your head. Hum.........a backhanded racist post or maybe blackhanded racist would be better. Barry Bonds put himself in the spotlight when he was going after the most coveted record in baseball. Setting the home run record and being a known cheater is about as high profile as someone get. The whole world knows he`s lying but he didn't have the guts to man up and that's all he had to do. He was already caught ! True Barry is no worse that the thousands before him who used drugs to enhance their performances but the record chase put this particular cheater in the spotlight and the more the spotlight is on you the more likely your going get burned. Bonds isn't being made a scapegoat for anything. He put himself where he is. End of story .

This is so ridiculous. From day one, this has been a joke. The feds are spending so much time and money on a speculation. This is not something that affects people personally. Let's use these resourses to investigate the wall street crooks who bilked many innocent people out of millions of dollars.

I think the problem with Bonds is the fact that he doesn't can't stand the media so they love feeding the feds with information like this so that they can take him down. Without Bonds nobody would be making the money that they are today because baseball would be even further in the grave than it is now (outside of Boston & New York of course)

Hey face it everyone, Bonds is guilty and they are going to prove it very soon. Bonds used steroids to break the single season home run and all time home run records. He cheated PERIOD!
Hank Aaron is the true all time home run champion, and Roger Maris is still the single season home run leader. Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa all were "Juiced" so Maris is still the single season champion.
Looking forward to the titles going back to Aaron, and Maris. The TRUE HOME RUN CHAMPIONS!!

So it was ok for Hank to use amphetamines and the "record" is "clean" however, what Bonds did is wrong? Just face it, Bonds is the HR champ, only Alex will change that & at the end of the day, there never will be a clean record no matter who you're talking about. Athletes are alawys going to find that edge that gives them an advantage no matter what the sport.
And @Martin - the fact is, NOBODY CARES THAT BONDS DID STEROIDS, the media thinks we do, but WE DO NOT CARE AND NEVER WILL. Even with the feds having a positive test, it still doesn't prove he knew there were steroids in his body. Maybe they were "testing" on him & he never knew what they were putting in him.

The people who claim this is a witch hunt against Bonds just don't know the facts. When he was directed to testify at the grand jury, he was granted immunity, meaning that if he had testified truthfully, no charges could have been brought against him. The government wasn't interested in going after the athletes, but rather was going after the manufacturers and distributors of the steroids. However, when Bonds failed to testify truthfully, he was obstructing the government's investigation and he deserves to be prosecuted for doing this.
