Instead of putting forth a few more laborious hours on the baseball diamond Monday, the Yankees have taken their act on the road. Joe Girardi -- formerly known as the fiery manager who couldn't get along very well with players -- decided to take his team to a billiard hall and have an intrasquad tournament. As ridiculous as it might sound to some, I actually think this is a very good idea. The Yanks have had some turnover on the roster, in addition to the offseason crap involving Joe Torre's book and the entire Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal.
"It's a day to forget about baseball a little bit and think about our family here," Jorge Posada said. "It's a little rest, and I think it's good for everyone."With a long road ahead -- Opening Day is six weeks from Monday -- the team has plenty of time to work on the game of baseball. Spring Training drills can be tedious and draining, not to mention unnecessary for veteran stars six weeks away from their first meaningful action. Kudos to Girardi for recognizing the team's need to get away for a day and just enjoy themselves as a quasi-family.
