Manny, Dodgers Just $1.5 Million Apart

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have been torturing us all offseason with their will-he/won't-he business but according to reports from SI.com's Jon Heyman, the two sides may be closing in on a deal.

Or, to be more accurate, they're not as far off as Manny's recent rejection of a $45 million contract offer would have you believe: Heyman says there's just a small-ish $1.5 million separating the two sides as they continue to attempt to work out a deal amenable to both sides.
Manny Ramirez is now asking the Dodgers for a two-year contract including deferred monies with end a value of 43.5 million, according to a statement emailed to the media by Scott Boras.

"We have continued to work with Ned (Colletti), and the Dodgers to do away with artificial barriers to get a deal completed. There is no issue with deferred money being part of any part of the contract. We just want to make sure the value is stated accurately and appropriately ... We have yet to hear from them on our last three offers," Boras said.
It's really a shame that both sides on this deal are so bizarrely mishandling things, otherwise, it would make for decent drama and intrigue, particularly because of the fact that Ramirez and Boras now seem willing to take deferred money, something that they claimed was the sticking point for their latest rejection of a Dodgers' contract offer.

Of course, "deferred money" can mean lots of things depending on how long that deferral lasts, so don't be surprised if there aren't at least a few more back-and-forths before Manny finally ends up signing with Los Angeles.
