Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have been torturing us all offseason with their will-he/won't-he business but according to reports from SI.com's Jon Heyman, the two sides may be closing in on a deal.Or, to be more accurate, they're not as far off as Manny's recent rejection of a $45 million contract offer would have you believe: Heyman says there's just a small-ish $1.5 million separating the two sides as they continue to attempt to work out a deal amenable to both sides.
Manny Ramirez is now asking the Dodgers for a two-year contract including deferred monies with end a value of 43.5 million, according to a statement emailed to the media by Scott Boras. It's really a shame that both sides on this deal are so bizarrely mishandling things, otherwise, it would make for decent drama and intrigue, particularly because of the fact that Ramirez and Boras now seem willing to take deferred money, something that they claimed was the sticking point for their latest rejection of a Dodgers' contract offer.
"We have continued to work with Ned (Colletti), and the Dodgers to do away with artificial barriers to get a deal completed. There is no issue with deferred money being part of any part of the contract. We just want to make sure the value is stated accurately and appropriately ... We have yet to hear from them on our last three offers," Boras said.
Of course, "deferred money" can mean lots of things depending on how long that deferral lasts, so don't be surprised if there aren't at least a few more back-and-forths before Manny finally ends up signing with Los Angeles.

Yeah JKallis, the only way the Yankees could ever win is by buying a pennant. That's why the Steinbrenners and the team are the most hated in baseball.

jkallis; Manny is a great hitter BUT he's a cancer. He knocked a 60 year old clubhouse employee to the ground when he was here in Boston, just because Manny didn't get what he wanted. He's just another spoiled overpriced ball player. With everyone that's been getting laid off he should've taken the Dodgers orginal offer and be grateful he had a job at all.

Manny's too greedy or at least his scumbag agent is, to ever accept only 20 mil a year, especially after seeing what that lard ass Sabathia got.

Manny's talents are overshadowed by his craziness. He is a big baby who doesn't think of the team only himself. I guess that is why he has Boras for an agent, another man who only thinks of money not what's good for baseball. I don't understand how a true team could want Manny after what he did to the Sox his last season. Only tried when it suited him and screw the team. He always starts a season saying how he loves it there and wants to retire there, but a switch turns on when he doesn't get his way and all the love he said he had is replaced by selfishness. Good luck to the TEAM who gets him. I hope no team gives into the greed, especially in the economic times we're in today. It's CRAZY and so is Manny.

The Yankees Dont Need Manny. Here s how they bring the pennant home to NY: Trade Hughes and Kennedy for Peavy...DONE DEAL. The Padres are begging to get rid of Peavy's contract and that offer is much better than what they were willing to accept from the Cubs. Try this rotation on for size: Peavy, Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Pettitte. Cashman pay attention here, this thing would work and give you the most dangerous rotation in the league for YEARS.

Are you on drugs? Why would anyone take two overrated fringe pitchers in exchange for an established ace?

To all you people that have never played baseball,or any sports other than High school sports.Remember this forever. You can spend however much money you want on a team. But,you still have to play the games, and hit the ball. And hitting a baseball every day,on a daily bases,is the hardest thing to master, over a career..The "Rocket".

machadobrad, The Yankees have won 26 world championships. Stop your f--- crying so-looser.
Jeter, Posada, Williams, Rivera all home grown and yeah we bought Rodriguez we also gave up a pretty good player soriano for him, (home grown) Boston paid 51 million just for the rights for matsuzaka, they bought Drew, Lowell came from The Marlins, most of their players except for Youkalis and Pedroia are from somewhere else. Free Agency is part of the game. why do you critisize the Steinbereners because they invest their money wisely and don't pocket it like the other owners do. We paid for our own stadium and we kep the name Yankee Stadium instead of selling of the name. get a live and stop being a so-looser. deep down inside you need us, because you just can't accept your team whatever that is SUCKS... and I suspect you are a Boston FAn..... The RAYS kick yur ass.... the Yankees won that season series..
