Martinez is in stable and alert condition at a San Francisco hospital, where he will remain in the hospital for observation over the next three to four days. The team said he is expected to make a full recovery.
The Giants placed Martinez on the disabled list and called up right-hander Justin Miller to take the roster spot.
Chilling Accident at Giants Game
Joe Martinez walks away from a stunning accident on the mound Thursday. The San Francisco Giants reliever was bloodied by a line drive off the bat of Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Mike Cameron in the ninth inning, but remained conscious following the blow.

Martinez, who made his major league debut Tuesday, dropped to his knees after Cameron's liner struck him near the right temple. "That ball smoked him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had no chance."

Cameron, center, hesitantly approached second base and had to be consoled by Giants players after the accident. "I hope the young man is all right and gets a chance to get back on the field," Cameron said.

Martinez was tended to by head trainer Dave Groeschner, right, Bochy, top left, and Giants first baseman Rich Aurilia. After a few minutes, Martinez was able to walk away with a cloth held to his nose. The 26-year-old pitcher was taken to a hospital for a CT scan and evaluation.

The scene was especially harrowing for Cameron and the players having learned of Nick Adenhart's tragic accident Thursday morning. Adenhart, a 22-year-old Angels pitcher, was killed in a car accident shortly after appearing in a game versus the Athletics Wednesday night.

Baseball is now officially a blood sport. I would have thought a baseball bat was used to beat up a man but this is just odd.

I remember in the early 80s when Ron Cey was hit in the head by a 90 mph pitch from Goose Gossage in the World Series, I was there. Scary stuff. I loved Ron Cey back in the day! Glad the outcome was good

Well, it is VERY RARE for someone to die from a concussion like Natasha Richardson did. Infact, only a couple of people have died from concussions. That is how rare it is for someone to die from one. 'Cause I myself had a concussion the other week and they even told me that it is uncomon for someone to die from a concussion. I got my concussion during softball practice at school. But I do hope he gets better.

For the record, reb, Natasha Richardson did not die from a concussion. She died from an epidural hematoma. A collection of blood between brain and the skull. The increase in pressure means something has to give and it's the brain that does, not the skull.

Reb, get off the page. N.R. did not die from a concussion. She died from intracranial bleeding. Second thing, what is your authority that people do not die from concussion? You are clearly not a physician and have done no medical research or study. Even if your general point is true, it has nothing to do with either N.R.'s injury or with this pitcher's injury, of which concussion was only one facet.

Maybe the time has come for pitchers to have some protection. Catchers do, and pitchers' position surely puts them in the line of fire. Football players have all kinds of padding. Why not baseball players who are in infield positions?
