David Riske Might Need Elbow Surgery

The Brewers already shallow bullpen could be taking another hit. David Riske, the 32 year-old right-hander may be forced to undergo surgery. If so, it would be the famous, yet dreaded, Tommy John surgery. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal reports that Riske will try to strengthen his elbow in the next month via rehab, but if that doesn't work he'll be going under the knife.

Riske was shut down last September with elbow issues and has only appeared in one game this season before being shut down again. The problems in his elbow sound quite unique.
"Apparently, the bone spur prevented him from extending his elbow, which prevented the laxity from being exposed," said assistant general manager Gord Ash.

"The ligament isn't torn. It's stretched. Dr. Yocum said to do the same thing Dr. Raasch recommended - a course of therapy. If there's no improvement over that course of time, he'll have to have surgery."
It seems like most of the time we hear about a pitcher trying to rehab and return, rather than just shutting down and getting everything cleaned up, he ends up having to break down and have surgery anyway. I'm sure it sucks to have the injury occur, but it's probably best long-term move for everyone involved to just get it fixed as soon as possible.

As for the Brewers, they desperately need Trevor Hoffman back, but, even with him, the bullpen still leaves much to be desired.
