It might be a tough Monday morning in Yankeeland. It's not just that they were swept by the hated Red Sox in Fenway Park. It's that their all-world closer, Mariano Rivera, coughed up a two-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning en route a 5-4 11-inning loss Friday night. It's that $82.5 million free-agent addition A.J. Burnett was gifted a six-run lead Saturday afternoon and he blew it, only to be matched by the bullpen in a 16-11 loss. It's that to add insult to a number of injuries, Jacoby Ellsbury stole home -- on a straight steal no less -- against Andy Pettitte Sunday night to cap off the sweep.
In a town like New York where the pressure is always on, it's bad enough to get swept. It's much worse to have it happen because of blown saves, flat-out lousy pitching and a mental error by a veteran starting pitcher.
There will be plenty of external pressure on the team, and particularly Joe Girardi, who is essentially managing for his job this year, but the internal pressure is much more acute and real.
Angel Berroa (.305 career on-base percentage) is the team's regular third baseman until Alex Rodriguez returns now that Cody Ransom is on the 60-day disabled list.
The pitching staff is in the midst of a makeover with setup man Brian Bruney and starter Chien-Ming Wang also placed on the disabled list over the weekend. Phil Hughes will get the first crack at filling in for Wang Tuesday night, while rookie Mark Melancon, who threw two scoreless frames in his major league debut Sunday, has been added to a bullpen looking for a reliable source of innings beyond closer Mariano Rivera.
And while it's far too early to call GM Brian Cashman's latest attempt to overhaul the pitching staff a failure, Yankee fans should be worried. Burnett and CC Sabathia have yet to live up to expectations, but there is reason to think they will eventually. The bullpen, on the other hand, looks like a disaster. Even though the Yankees have moved away from expensive free-agent relievers, they still haven't been able to build a sturdy bridge to Rivera.
New York entered Sunday night's game with a 6.68 bullpen ERA, the third worst mark in the majors. The Red Sox? They led all of a baseball with a collective 2.57 ERA from their relievers.
That probably says it all.
The Yankees have never had a problem making a big splash in free agency to shore up a glaring need (Sabathia, Burnett, Mark Teixeira), but in the last few years it seems like they've repeatedly overlooked the smaller details.
New York has battled its share of adversity this season, but Boston has as well. Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jed Lowrie, Julio Lugo and Rocco Baldelli are among the key contributors who have been sidelined early on, and John Smoltz is still weeks away from joining the team.
But the Red Sox have made it a point to stockpile depth. They have almost two full rotations of major league-ready pitching between Boston, Triple-A Pawtucket and the disabled list and a number of useful, flexible position players at the ready.
There is still a long way to go in 2009, and it's unlikely anyone has heard the last of the Yankees, but for now at least, the Red Sox clearly have the upper hand.

I hear the Yankees are trying to press charges against Ellsbury for a "home invasion".....but when questioned by the police, the 39,928 in attendance denied seeing a thing. ;-)

The Yanks have been notoriusly slow starters in April for years. Last year they had a slew of early season injuries that kept them fighting up. When A-Rod gets back in the line-up since he decided to focus on baseball instead of his many other vices the line-up should improve. Let's see what hughes and Melancon have this time, and then see if Kennedy is ready for the big boys yet. To early to nail the coffin closed guys!!

As a Yankee fan for 60 years, it was pathetic to watch a team go from great to gastly. I know injuries play a big role but plays like Beroa made and stealing of home with a left handed hitter up forced me to shut the TV in disgust. I know it's a long season, but if the Yankees play like they had this weekend it's all over.

I have said this b4 & I'll say it again, you can't buy a championship. You can buy "A" champion, but not a "CHAMPIONSHIP". It takes real comradery for a championship to form. Don't get me wrong, I love the Yankees, but the commisar thinks you just throw money at a problem & that'll fix it. All the pressures of playing in NYC isn't enough for the commisar.
How many companies would succeed at all if they never had any setbacks. But, as a Yankee, with this particular commisar(Jr&Sr) setbacks aren't permitted. Either perform flawlessly or you're history. And if they don't make the W/S this year I guarantee, Joe will be gone & the commisar will just throw more money at buying a new manager. Mark my words.

I don't like the Red Sox, but I like them a smidge better than the Yankees. What irritates me is the ESPN announcers and their obvious bias. They were absolutely astonished that anyone could outplay the mighty Yankees. Well, they need to check out the last couple of years....the Yankees haven't been mighty for a long time. Reminds me of Notre Dame...lousy, lousy, lousy, but living off past glories.

just imagine if your boss told you hey come in but whether you do good work and work hard or sit on your butt we are still going to pay you,how would you be motivated, red sox fans congrats on a good team with hardly no money spent, however let me correct you on something,26 titles is not the past it is a record!and unless someone breaks it ,it stands alone ,if you buy any baseball stat book in 2009 its in there the most titles in sports, and untill someone breaks it ,you are going to hear it,and the closest to doing it are the st louis cardinals with 10 ,not the red sox,i mean we as yankee fans cant complain not when you have teams like the cubs who have not one in over 100 years,or the mets 23 years,we yankee fans are to spoiled expecting the yankees to keep winning titles .i mean when you have 26 titles what the heck is one more or even 2 going to make a difference.

The Sox just have to do something about "Nancy" Drew. This guy has been a total "bust" and is an all but automatic out. Hitting 5th???? How much longer are the Sox going to sit there and watch Drew look at 3 strikes without taking the bat off of his shoulder, or swinging like he's dancing in some ballet? Is this guy on Thorazine or what? Enough is enough.
